Does anyone else live far from where they work? On a good day my drive to work in about an hour and a half(one way) I work from 6:30am till 5:00pm, yes 4 ten hour days unless the boss wants me to work OT. I like my job but it really gets to me, sometimes it feels like all I get done is drive.
I want to move closer to work but $$$ is an issue right now. Every house I look at is either to much $$$ or is in a bad hood or good hood but in very bad shape, etc...
I guess I'm just tired and frustrated with life in general. Sorry for the rant.
Does anyone else feel my pain??? |

I only drive 30 minutes if I do the speed limit. I have been known to make it to work from my house in 20 minutes. The drive is 21 miles. Figure that one out. I am tired of not working, in fact I am so bored now that I am posting this at work.

I'd say everyone either FEELS your pain or at any rate has FELT your pain!
I'd rather buy a lesser home in a good neighborhood close to work and overtime repair it then sit in traffic one more day. Currently, I don't deal with traffic even though I live downtown, I go against the flow each day thankfully. |

Same here GoldBerry. I can do home remodeling, in fact I like doing it. Its just not in the cards right now, or should I say wallet.
My drive in the morning is not too bad because I start so early but when I get off work its right at rush hour. Its a mess. |

When started working here there were other people that lived in my area working here to so we would car pull so it was not as bad, still travelling that far just for work was a pain...lol.
I have not even had time to play with my new camera and I've had it for about 3 weeks. |

Telecommute! It's the only way to go. I too have a very long drive WHEN I go to the office - fortunately that's only two days a week, the other three I work from home. Thank goodness for computers!

My commute is about 45 steps - from the bedroom to the office. My boss is in Texas so the commute would be insane! Its great to work from home! And I have wireless so if I get bored with one set of four walls, I can change rooms. Never could do that in a cube farm...

I can do some of my OT at home but I have to be in the office to do the everyday things ie: deal with customers, server backup, help other people with their CAD questions etc...(I'm a CAD drafter by the way...lol) |

I have worked up to 35 minute drive from home. Not worth it!I have lived as close as 4 blocks. I now work about 7 miles away, 15 minute drive give or take.
There are several hidden costs in long commutes - your time, the one thing money cannot buy, is being spent commuting. 3 hours a day commuting? that's 12 hours a week! I spend 2.5 hours, so I have 8.5 more hours a week to do what i want than you do. Sleep. Take pics. Post here. Play with my kids...
car costs - fuel, tires, depreciation, insurance...my wife worked 45 minutes (1 way) from home when we first got married - in 2 years that was 50,000 miles on a new car...so when we traded it at 4 years old we LOST over $4,000 trade in due to high mileage - not to metion the tires, gas, oil changes that all those extra miles cost.
stress - this can kill you years before it should. putting up with traffic is no fun - i have yet to meet the person that thinks it is. there was an article in the Sunday paper here about the toxins you ingest while driving (various exhaust fumes and other things).
If you buy a fixer upper and can commute 20 minutes each way or so the time to fix it up is right there! The money -if you can do the work yourself - is there too - with gasoline climbing taking 2 hours a day off your commute is real money.

lonewolf,
That's a killer commute, 3 hours a day plus a 10 hour workday, ugghh! Is there any relief in sight?
I drive just over an hour each way, but traffic rarely stops or even slows down significantly, and it's a scenic drive. I've been making more or less the same commute for over 9 years now, and expect to retire in about 9 and 1/2 more if things keep rocking along. In the meantime, yes I feel your pain, but maybe not as intensely as you do. Hang in there. |

Yawn.....
Roll out of bed, dog gambolling with pent-up glee, 10 steps to the right into the gallery, power up the 'puter.
Hang a left the length of the house, let dog out, start coffee. Back to the front, outside, get paper. Back inside, to the back of the house, let dog in, feed dog.
Unwrap paper, grab coffee, back to the front of the house, sit at computer.
That's my commute :-)
Robt.

Chris (Prof_Fate) - Something not factored into the cost formula is housing. Don't know about Doug (lonewolf), but the cost difference between where I live and where I work is extreme. The price of a house is two and three times more equaling up to $500,000 difference. Plus other related expenses are also higher (insurance, gas, etc...). Fortunately, as mentioned earlier, I telecommute most of the week. If I didn't, not sure what I'd do...

I get up each weekday morning at 5am, walk to the railway station, about 15 mins. Catch th 5:52 train, arrive at destination station at 06:15. Then catch a bus at 06:45. Clock into work at 07:00 and leave at 16:00. Arriving home at 17:20. Normally in bed around 22:00-23:00. By the end of the week me very tired! It works out to about a 17 hour day. Even if I dont work hard during the day its still makes me tired!
Its real bad in the winter months but great now it is getting light in the morning. Nothing worse than going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark!

Lonewolf,
I know this feeling of wasted life from a long commute. (I have one of those monster commutes too). One of the things I enjoy on my way to work, is hunting for things to take pictures of. I started getting up and on the road 45 min earlier so I could shoot a picture just as the sun was rising. It has made the commute "My Time". I never take the same way to work any more. A 15 min diversion is all you need to break up that commute and turn it into quality time. |

Yeah, in america it takes 7 minutes to get through a traffic light.
It takes me a half an hour on two highways to get to work! so much time could be better spent with my daughters.

I drive maybe 8 minutes to work and back. I've been thinking about driving a truck though...but the thought of being away for so long at a time (weeks) is kind of turning me against it. I'm a neat freak and a germaphobe -- so I don't know where I'd shower and all that stuff.

I feel your pain. Its a good 30 mins for me + traffic and on a very dangerous highway.
I think high speed/tech railway systems should be built between high living populous areas and high industrial/business areas. This would also save us big time on gas.
Shame company̢۪s don̢۪t compensate employees for travel time. |

I know exactly what you're feeling, here in Mexico city, it takes from 3 to 5 hours per day to get to the job for many people (including my self). >( |

Well this mornings drive was almost two hours. The first 20 miles of my drive is on a two lane road with a speed limit of 45mph and no passing zones but when I can I go much faster but this morning I got behind someone going 35. By the time I got to the city traffic was a royal mess, backups everywhere.
This is really getting to me, the other thing that makes it worse is that I am starting not to like my job anymore so that makes the long drive even worse. I'm ready to freak out, I am tired of my entire "life". |

My job is 7 miles from my home. Last June I gave my car away and haven't gotten another to replace it. My commute now is either by foot (takes me one and a half hours one way) or by bicycle (half an hour, ow). I walk or ride in all weather, including inclement weather. Recently, I have ridden home in two snow storms in blizzard like conditions. My job is very stressful and hectic and despite the fact that I'm on my feet constantly while at work, my work or ride home is relaxing and stress relieving. I'm in the best shape of my life. The biggest problems I've found with this is the risk of getting hit by a car or truck with all the idiot drivers out there. Also, the exhaust fumes from the vehicles, especially diesel fuel engines, is disgusting.
I've had jobs in the past where I had very long commutes and hated just sitting in the car. One hot summer day on a drive home commute I fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended a tractor-trailer. I've also seen many accident during those commutes. I'm not all that convinced that my commute now is any more dangerous than driving in to work with the high speeds of our roads today (if you're lucky not to have to deal with traffic). In good weather I absolutely love my commute now.
There is another way. |
