"It's time again for you to put yourself in the shoes of a freelancer trying to sell your work to a stock photography company. Make your photograph sellable, but be as original as you can. Good luck!"

soo its not so silly for a non-native English speaking somebody
i have no clue either

I see it as this:
Take a picture that would make a great selling print.
To the basic-ist level (lol, most basic), I would call it a free study.

Stock Photography is, basically, photography which has a general appeal, enabling it to be sold and used in various personal and commercial endeavours.

No, definitely not...you will need an image that is saleable to the general public.
High quality, wide appeal, etc.
It is definitely the type of shot that does well here...should be a competitive challenge with really high votes.

Simplest thing to do. Take a look at the entries for the last 'stock photo' challenge under challenge history.

I was told by an "expert" during the last stock challenge that my image wasn't stock worthy, which was funny considering. He obviously hadn't seen many farming magazines (sadly, I have!).
I might have to skip the challenge this time though ... too many pros with their 20 cent portfolios to compete against.
; )

Can I just ask as to whether "stock photography" (in the voters eyes) is the kind of prints you can buy in DIY and furniture shops
or
The simple strong images that web designers and advertising types use as an "element" of their work
or both, or neither?
???

One thing that might be useful is sorting by most popular on a stock photography site like shutterstock to see what _really_ sellable images look like..
And I was at a loss about this challenge until this thread, thanks all of you for the links!

There are many here who are selling their images as stock and stock can be anything. If the quality is good, any image sells as stock. Designers are always looking for different ways to express their point. There are different people browsing stock libraries for all different needs.
I can't think of anything that's not stock. Yes, even xxx images could be stock. Even a pile of shit could be stock. Stock is everything. Just produce something that would be considered good by more than one person. |
