Hello Good People!
Long time since I've posted to my fave site! Hope everyone is doing well!
I am trying to see about some cgi formmail programs. Anyone know of a good one thats free?
Basically I am trying to do 2 basic things;
1. Create a form that will translate into an email for me &
2. Be able to upload files to my server thru another form.
I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer up.
Cluelessly Yours
Rooster!

check with whomever you have webservice...I am with comcast and they do not give me (a consumer) access to write and run CGI scripts. So first fid out if you can.
PERL is what you want, specifically.
//www.php-mysql-perl.com/scripts/cgiandperl/form_processors/s6491-mailform.html
//www.freedownloadscenter.com/Web_Authoring/CGI_Programming_Tools/MailForm.html
Now then, comcast has a boiler plate section for point and click website building - very basic stuff. Things like counters, guestbook, etc. They have a mail form there - i created it with their (lousy) interface and posted it...i then took that page in my browser, Open As Source to get eh HTML coding, and with that i can modify it and paste it into my website as i see fit. It does not give me complete control, but it can be made to function. Also, comcast gives me one website space per user name (email) and 7 of those...so i can have 7 forms if i want.

A lot of web hosts don't like CGI scripts because of server vulnerability through them. Besides, they are kind of a bear to work with. However, do a search on the web for free scripts and you should find many. If you can work with PHP, I highly recommend their formmail script and web hosts like them better. :-)
Good luck! |

As someone who has worked for several ISPs (including in the abuse depts), I can only recommend that you NOT use formmail from matt's script archive - it's regularly attacked & exploited by spammers, and can lead to your email being rejected or at worst your site disabled! There are many alternatives out there, such as the much more secure NMS formmail.

Good to know. It was so popular a few years back and I haven't been using any sort of formmail since then so I haven't been paying attention. I rescind my comment! |

thanks guys!
cgi email came preinstalled with my web host but they recently recommended the nms. I'm not sure how it all works but will check into it & see if I can figure things out.
THis stuff is REALLY hard especially when learning & doing it all at the same time!

Most hosting companies support PHP these days and it's much easier to find reliable and secure free PHP pages for the purposes you describe. However, most hosting companies also have these basic scripts available anyway.

Is this for your Psycho Art Gallery Site? If so, It appears that you are using Front Page Extensions which most likely means a Windows Backend, in that case you would need CGI, Java, ASP or Perl (if your host provides it).
When you say a form that translates to a mail from me...do you mean like a PM (message stored locally in a database) or an actual email sent from you to someone outside of your site?
A form to upload files would end up being a whole different module.
Have you found out what your host provides? All kinds of flavors out there. Unix w/PHP, Windows running IIS with ASP .Net (Active Server Pages) and other weird combinations.

Hey,
it's actualy for another site I am working on. My site provides all that stuff you mentioned but recommends that I use nms script. Apparently a lot of host are limiting what one can do on their site to enhance security.
I basically want something that will come to me in an actual email.

Yup...I have Earthlink Web Hosting ASP .net package cause I do a little asp, but Earthlinks Mail uses ASMTP which requires authentication and it's a bugger to pass those through the code.
If you are on an ASP server you can ftp the utilities Here up to your site and it will give you a pretty good idea what components your Host allows. Also there is a (asp) Mail component tester that tests the most popular asp Mail Components to see if they are supported and work.
