I have no photography background I dont know shit .. anyway! so far I`ve gathered at least that the Nikon D70 and Canon 20D are a good choice! all I can say is that my father is more than likely going to be using it with a water housing in the sea! any gurus with some wisdom for me out there! much appreciated thanks

Here is a good comparison between the D70 and the 20D:

may want to look into heat / cooling issues when using the water housing for both cameras, I honestly don't know which would be better but I remember hearing something about it being an issue for some cameras when using an underwater housing system.

I love Ken Rockwell critiques, because he looks for practical issues, not the things that you will never know the difference in real life shooting.

I guess that's why you have a Nikon. If he spent as much time using a camera as he does writing about it he would stand a little higher in my estimation. Everyone has an oppinion and Ken Rockwel has his.

I was wondering about the same. I did a google search last night nikon d70 vs canon 20d and I am little surprised by the results. Initialy I wouldn'd put these 2 cameras in the same class. Then I had a look on rockwell site and the question rised in my head too. From my heart I would incline to Nikon (maybe also due to the fact that I have my A70 CCD burned after 10k shots). I always wanted to have a Nikon! But now whith all these dSLR seems that canon is ahead. Only if we take into consideration the ISO settings and the noise (canon is almost noiseless) canon is ahead.
Now, when I look at the advantages of Nikon I really wonder myself if I can master these advantages (or even understand them). I am a newby at photography and what impresses my first is the pic quality.
This summer with some luck I might be able to jump into the dSLR boat.Question is D70 or XT
My heart still longers for a Nikon but with the XT on the market I really don't know.
Any opinions . I mean personal ones. I also did read a lot of reviews but some real feed back would be very helpfull.
Anybody can sincerely talk their problems or di-satisfactions (like moire on D70 or even worse the shutter problems)?
nsbca7, I follow your posts sometimes and I know you have switched from Nikon. Would be nice to list one more time the reasons.

PS I don't own any glass and for me it is the beginning of a system.
Thanks

I didn't switch from Nikon digital. Basically when I made the switch it was for me a switch from film to digital. At the time (and still) Canon had the only full frame DSLR that had good image quality. I bought the 1Ds. As far as which is better between the 20D and the D70 I have no personal experience with either body.

To be honest, if I had made my choice based soley on either customer service or lens selection I would have stayed with Nikon.

Given the fact that it will probably be used in a housing I would lean more towards the nikon mainly because of the 12-24 f4. Not only is it one of the best lens ever made above water, it is the perfect lens for underwater for every thing except macro. Unfortunally it will not take any extension (it would cause the focus point to be in the lens) so it is not the best for that.

First of all, read the dpreview reviews for the technical side of the story, try to find some other reviews about lenses you intend to use, the underwater housings, flash systems and their underwater performance etc.
Try them both in a store. What feels good for you. Determine what your goals are and which camera system fits best and which total package fits best in your budget.
Don't limit yourself to Canon and Nikon.

I bought the D70 because the reviews were great everywhere, all four friends that I have who are professional photo's each own one and are happy with them and I didn't like the feel of the 300D or the kit lens. Nikon's also a darn good company with a great reputation, Rockwell aside.

Great comparison. They are bothe excellent cameras. I chose the d70 because I have always used Nikon and I did not want to deal with a big learning curve. Both are excellent.
