Hmmmmm a Catalina trip for one of the months we have nothing planned yet? hmmm that would make a great trip/Photo op.

So over 700 photo's Arie? new CF card? or laptop? can't wait to see some photos

If you're at the Queen Mary you are also at the Spruce Goose, and the Russian Sub.

But... if you are in that parking lot you are also right next to the shuttle to Catalina Island. That would be a cool photo day trip! [/quote]

The Goose is toast... it's in Seattle I think. The Sub is there but man, it's a ricketty old tube that looks like it's gonna sink. Plus it's very crowded inside. I don't think I can fit inside with my big camera backpack. It maybe interesting though. I'm a bit scared of the sub. As for Catalina Islands, I spent a month on that island during redisency covering the hospital and the clinic, working about 120 hours/week for 4 weeks and promised never to set foot on that island again.

LOL.. well you can look at it as a vacation instead of work :). I've never seen the other side of the island.. just the tourist spots near the front.. hmmm that would make for another whole weekend outting?? Any thoughts? (not anytime soon though, just something to think about)

Avalon (the town on Catalina) is actually a very small part of Catalina. Rest of it is wild area for camping hiking etc. They have wild boars and buffalo as you probably know. Would be hard treking to get to photograph them. Plus can't get too close as they might charge or something. But there are a lot of funny drunks in town. :)
Visiting or working, the place raises my stress level.

You might have to see a doctor about that :).
Anyone knows what it cost for the fairy.. probably a day trip would suffice if at all as an suggestion. hmmm i've knew they had buffalo there..

Again, if it costs money, i can't go :( I can handle $10. But not more. I'd love to go to Catalina, but can't fund it right now. If anyone knows where I can get a free ticket... let me know~

As for the photos, my friend had her laptop with us! :)

You could always swim... it's free, ha ha...
Anyways, I'm assuming that tickets are out. Any suggestions? The Renaissance faire is on it's last weekend. It's $20, so it might be a bit much for some. I don't mind going around the shoreline area and taking a picture of the Queen Mary, should be free minus parking. How about Olvera Street? Santa Monica/Getty? Descanzo Gardens? Santa Anita Park (horses)? LA zoo? Griffith Park if it's open? Marina Del Ray/Pelicans?
Any other suggestions? anyone? anyone?

I like:
Santa Anita Park
LA Zoo
Griffith Park
Marina Del Ray Pelicans
Long Beach Industrial Areas

What and how much are the Descanzo Gardens? We could also go to the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. I am up for any of these. Let's hold off on the Getty til June I think. I was just in Santa Monica the other day. I was at Olivera Street in December... so, I don't mind waiting til July or August to go back down there either. I want to see something new maybe...

I'm looking at Santa Anita's schedule and I think the season is over.
check out their web site. No upcoming events but I'm not sure if they have practice sessions or not.
//www.santaanita.com/NewsEvents/UpcomingEvents/

Griffith Park still closed for visitors.

Descanso Gardens is open from 9-5 and it's $7, //www.descansogardens.org/site/general.cfm
(I think Huntington's is $15 for comparisons)

I'm actually most interested in returning to the Renaissance Faire, but it's twenty bucks. Another photog that I went with has posted his pics here for you to see what it would be like. //danrich.smugmug.com/gallery/537913

Marina Del Ray seems to have a birdwatching wetland area that appears to be free. Check it out here //beaches.co.la.ca.us/BandH/Marina/chacepark.htm
//www.visitthemarina.com/index.php/splash_page/birdwatch.html

I'll try to find out about the tour guide at the QM tomorrow. What does everybody think about the options?

Why is Griffith Park closed? I know the observatory is closed, but the entire park???

I am up for Descanso, the Wetland in Marina or something else. I can't go to the Ren Faire this year :(
05/18/2005 03:23:50 AM · #87
Marina sounds good to me. But whatever the group comes up with i'm fine. Looks like its just going to be the 3 of us again.. if no one else reply's lol. should attract less attention. Griffith Park would be nice, if it was open :).

All good suggestions Tom. I'll check on the boards tomorrow.. getting late :)
05/18/2005 11:24:15 AM · #88
Okay, is the Marina good for everyone? We can always wander around the area after going to the wetlands. There are boats and people and things :) If the Marina is good, let me know. I'll tell site council to change the heading on this thread! :)

I don't have DPC at work (blocked) so I'll check it as soon as I get home. If you need to reach me: mirlantany@yahoo.com as I can't see PMs from work either. :(

See what happens when you abuse the system at work.. you get your privileges taken away. That'll teach you next time before you take a candid photo of your boss and post it on your portfolio :D

Marina works for me as well. It'll give me time to use the Sigma 70-300 again. If a collegue of mine buys my DReb, kit lens, and 55-200 Mark II lens, then I'll buy a 20/30D, Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 and maybe a Bigma (Sigma 50-500), he he. The Bigma should be excellent for birdshooting.
I had so much fun at the Renaissance Faire last week I'm gonna go again on Sunday. Let me know if anyone is interested in joining.

I would join ya but I have no means of transportation to get me there.. GL on the deal with you collegue.Hope you have fun at the festival!

Now.. why would you go shooting birds with a "canon" such as the bigma.. there would be nothing left.

Good News!!!
My nurse got me four tickets and a tour guide. Who wants to be the last one?
Raul, did you download the firmware? If you want to go the the Ren. Faire, I can pick you up. It gets hot and crowded in the afternoon, so I plan on being there earlier than at 10AM, so when they open so I'm at the door to get in. I can pick you up and drop you off if you like, but you'll owe me a soda. Let me know. Get the ticke on line as it's only $20 vs $22.50 at the ticket office.
here's their site

AWSOME!.. did you say tripods aren't allowed for the QM? thanks for the info on the fair. I'll let you know if its a-go tomorrow.

The firmware rocks.. like the new design on the menu and the 5 scale for the histogram.. thanks for the heads up.
05/18/2005 11:36:36 PM · #94
I don't know if tripods are allowed or not. Generally they don't allow tripods with out permission at museums, exhibits, etc, so I'm just assuming that they are no different than others.
Yeah, let me know on the faire, love to have company.
I'm glad to hear that the firmware is worth it. I only wish Canon would do the same for the DR to unlock the 10D features that they turned off. Oh well, atleast I have the hack for now. I think your firmware update also improves on the focusing as well.
My collegue isn't interested in buying my camera anytime soon, but that's ok.

Anyway, who is going to be the fourth person to join us???

Yay!!! I am happy we are going! I hope we get a 4th person! Maybe we should try to get Greg or Eric to join us! I have to go to bed, but somebody should PM them tomorrow...

They have 5 tickets for us now. A person that used to work there will give us a guided tour with access to rooms that are usually closed. A good time for her would be to meet there at 11AM. The tour will last about an hour and then we can take some shots for her as a thank you gift and then we can have lunch and explore the ship more on our own.
Let me know today so I can let her know by tomorrow.

This is soooo awsome :D i can't wait.. 11am works for me... mmaaann kinda sucks now because spiritual activity is usually at night :) no ghost shots this time.. but who knows one of us might get lucky!

Any of your buds from the yahoo group interested? Its ok if i'm the only Nikon their..i'm use to it. Supporting the D70 group :) w00t w00t!

I've had three outings with the Canon club in two weeks so I'm giving them a rest. Personally, long as they enjoy photography, I don't care what they use, Nikon, Canon, disposible film camera, pinhole with a film paper... Who cares, I laugh at all those brand groupies that say only this or that brand is worthwhile. I think it comes from finding self esteem from a product that they bought.
05/19/2005 01:54:46 PM · #99
Wow. that must mean you have lots of photos. But i prefer Pinhole :). What has happened to our large LA DPC'ers. It has dwindled down to only a few and the occasional outburst from louddog. :)
05/19/2005 02:04:26 PM · #100
I don't know what happened to all the folks. Schedule, outing local, etc, etc, etc. Personally I prefer a small group, it allows us to talk, share tips, etc. People don't vote with their mouth, they vote with their feet. If you really want to go, then you go, not just talk about it. I also realize that there are folks with family/other stuff that can't find the time on Saturday/Sunday to go as well. As for me, I could care less, most of the time, I'm going by myself anyways. I didn't go to the last one b/c I don't like camping too much and hate dust on my camera.
Um... Dust.... BADDDDD..... Clean sensor, GOOOOOOD...... :)
So, unless Arie vehemetly objects, let's schedule to meet there at 11AM, now Arie and I can carpool I guess and pick you up on the way, sounds good?
