i hear that the 28-135 is wonderful, but if you really want a lot of zoom i think the newest tamron 28-300 is supposed to be surprisingly good for its zoom range (whatever that means). i'm sure the 28-135 produces better images, though.
edit: now that i see tom's post below, i realize you're not talking about the canon 28-135 that i was thinking of

Parking is $10 from 1hour till end of day.
To get on the boat you need tickets.
I'll try to find out Mon/Tues if we can get tickets/parking passes.
I just heard that the QM has filed for bankrupcy so the CEO might not be in the best of mood.
I'm hoping the Viagra pens might perk him up though.
Raul which 24-135 are you thinking about???

I thought parking was free. I guess it's free if you only go to the restaurants outside at Ports of Call but that might be a long walk to the Queen Mary, can't remember. Since they are going through a bankruptcy, we can either pay our way in or do something else. I'll do whatever the group decides. :D

Tom: Sorry forgot to post the name Tamron SP AF 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical, what are your thoughts on the sigma 12-24. I mean cause there could be such a long wait on the Tokina and theirs no reviews on popphoto. Would you happen to have another review site :)

The Sigma 12-24 gets good reviews on Pop. Photo, but it's expensive (over $600). According to the forum on dpreview.com, it has some quality control issues with some getting good ones and some not.
The Tokina 12-24 is in the new magazine, not yet on the web site, but it gets pretty good reviews, excellent for upto 8x10 prints if I remember correctly.
The older non Di Tamrons are so so from what I hear, all their Di Tamrons are pretty good. Should check out the Bob Atkins site when he tests the Tamron 28-300. At the long end, an entry Canon 75-300 outperforms it. I haven't researched any Nikon/Nikkor lenses so I can't really say, but Tamrons 17-35 Di (about $500) is good (all wide though). Tamron 28-75 Di (about $450) is good (less coverage than your kit lens). The Tokina 24-200 ($300 It's on sale at digitalfotoclub for $260 after a rebate). I hear good things about it and it is the cheapest and has a bit of a wide coverage. According to Pop Photo,
//www.popphoto.com/article.asp?section_id=2&article_id=309, it seems to perform well at the 24mm (36mm) range and not so hot at 200mm. But it won't matter b/c you'll be using this mostly in the 40-150 ish range as you'll use the 18-70 at the wide end, the Tokina at the middle, and the 75-300 at the long end. I'd bet on the Tokina unless you've a grand and get the 17-35 with a 28-75. I think Sigma's 18-135 has gotten only decent reviews.

Hold on let me check *cracks open piggy bank* hmmm 1..2..3.. about $3.75 :) nope.
Thanks Tom i really appreciate it. mmmaann i really wanted a wide angle before Anza, decisions..decisions. I just wanted to get an idea of the choices of midranges they're. I'll probably have to take a gander at the Tokina 24-200 when i get home.

Well, I asked my collegue to ask the Queen Mary's CEO for some tickets today. One sticking point is that they just filed for bankruptcy. I'll check with my collegue tomorrow.

Ok, the CEO is out of town, but it seems that a few of my collegues know the CEO and some tour guides. One said don't worry about the tickets so I guess it's a go. I asked for 6 tickets, so 5 should be a sure thing.

Well, I just pre ordered a Tokina from B&H. Hoping to get it in one or two weeks. More than enough time for Queen Mary Shoot. Anyone with a Canon DSLR is welcomed to try it out with me.
Who else is going? Remember, it should be free (normally a $23 ticket, I think).

Alright, I just got the Tokina 12-24mm lens today, prelim tests are pretty good. Very little CA in high contrast area, fast focus and high DOF. I think it's a definate keeper for me. Will have to have other Cannon folks try it out at the Queen.

Ah, the lens addiction grows, just got my 70-200f2.8L. Nice lens, heavier than I thought. I'm not intending to use this for the Queen, but I might bring it along since all my lenses fit in my big bag.

Ok, I have got the viagra pens in hand. I will try to start selling them this week! If we make enough to cover parking, I'll save the rest for future uses for the group!

Come on, who else wants to join us?
So far it's just four.
I'm willing to go shooting at other weekends in May as well.

I'm still not sure about that weekend... it will depend on softball, but I would love to make it.
Also, I don't know if anyone is interested, but the Van Nuys Airport has its annual air show coming up. I can check on the date and it seems call-in reservations might be necessary, although admission is still free. Anyone up for going??

Hey Chuck,
I'm up for the air show. Since we went shooting in LA (Photographic type that is) I've got a few more telephoto lenses and would love to try them out. Plus I'm gonna upgrade my desktop to 1G bytes of RAM so my Rawshooter will be flying as well. Would love to try my hand at plane photography.
