I am not sure what you mean by "to the dot". Are you refering to the color between the screen and the print or something else?

What you ask is not so easy, the computer monitor can display more colors then a print can reproduce. The whole area of color management and color profiles is pretty involved. What program are you using to edit you photos with?

Hi Matthew,

First, you should be aware that transmitted-light media (slides, monitor screens, etc) will by their nature have more dynamic range than reflected-light media (prints). That's just the nature of how light works.

With that said, the best possible screen accuracy comes with hardware calibration on a regular basis. Personally, I use the Pantone Colorvision Spyder, which works with both CRT and LCD monitors. Your monitor will "drift" over time, so calibration should be done at least monthly for best results.

Along with the calibration of the monitor the Colorvision software will create a color "profile" that is used every time you boot your system, you also have to tell your printer to use that color profile in your Editing Software and/or Color Management tab on your Printer properties Dialog.

ED: To get your prints to look "close" to the displayed image.
