David, just so you don't give up on the internet, I buy EVERYTHING over the internet. It's so convenient and much easier to price compare and shop than with your feet. You just have to find resellers you trust. Like B&H, Canoga Camera, SAMMYs camera, Hunts Photo and Video.

And use reseller ratings.

I buy lots of electronics stuff from Amazon, Dell.com, gateway.com, and Buy.com (just bought an external hard drive from them yesterday and it arived today, on the regular free shipping). I've bought my last three cameras from dell.com because their sales plus stackable coupons can't be beat.

So far, I haven't had a bad experience.

Back many many years ago, like 1977 or so, I bought a computer mail order and the company went out of business before shipping. My credit card handled or absorbed that one. (In fact, you might call your credit card company for this if Ritz doesn't come through. Tell them the vendor shipped a damaged unit and won't make good on it. Many credit card companies will handle this for you and let you refuse payment.

I had one other bad experience: again a long time ago, where I had included an $800 large cache SCSI card in a custom system from blackship computers. They shipped a cheaper SCSI card instead, and so I deducted this from my payment and wrote my credit card company a letter. The company complained to me several times about my adjustment in the system price, but I never had to pay for the card they didn't ship, and effectively, I never paid for the "loaner" card they shipped instead. The credit card company handled this beautifully.

Good luck. It sounds like Clara can help you out this time!

Don't you mean almost everything? I have yet to find a way to buy gasoline over the net...althought there is probably a way.

I have used amazon, egghead, zipzoomfly and lots of ebay sellers. never had a single problem, until i got into mail order of photography items...b&h is good, it seems all the rest suck.

how they can stay in business is beyond me. Ignore us hobbyists with word of mouth for a moment, but how does anyone buy from those places that upsell hard and delay shipping, etc. Seems very counter intuitive to me. I tried to spend a grand at adorama...they don't want my money apparently. the only quick response i got was when i left a message i was canceling my order (after 5 days of no answer to emails, transferred phone calls, etc). B&H took my money and got my my stuff in 3 days.

How do i buy wholesale? I'll go into the mailorder biz - me vs b&h - the rest won't be around long.

Deapee, you should definately not just take this lying down. I'm pretty certain US contains some form of consumer protection law to the effect that an item must be fit for the purpose for which it's intended (that is the case in Australia and the UK and probably most western common law nations). To simplify - you have statutory rights that dictate that if someone sells you something that's broken they have to give you a refund or an exchange. I'm not sure whether you can force them to refund the shipping costs - but one would suggest that would be sensible business practise on their behalf - worst case scenario - do as someone else has suggested and go straight to lowepro. Firstly lowepro has a lifetime guarentee on all their bags, and secondly they won't be too happy to hear about the treatment you've received from one of their dealers.
