the books ive read say use f8 for portraits, i end up haveing to use f13 with a film speed of around 800 even when using a speedlight and bowens esprit light kit, any ideas where i am going wrong

I would lower you film speed - I use 100 ISO - that will lower you f setting - but you do want to keep that f at or above f8 to keep your DOF - unless that is what you want!

I hope this helps

i am hoping to acheive high key results, shots all on a white background, one brolly, one softbox, sb80dx on camera bouncing off ceiling, it seems like i have too many lights and i would like to simplify the operation, shoulders are hunched carrying all my kit around, any suggestions

Camera Model Name
Canon EOS 20D
Shooting Date/Time
1/11/2005 10:10:40 AM
Tv( Shutter Speed )
1/60
Av( Aperture Value )
4.5
ISO Speed
100
Flash
Off

You will notice This picture has a a lower Depth of Field because the Av is 4.5 - But I didn't want it too deep......

A picture is only as good as the light that is available - so if its portraites - 2 front strobs and a back light for good results - otherwise only shoot outside on that perfect cloudy day with the right buildings that reflect the light perfectly .... LOL

Here is one with the same settings - White background with a blue filter on the back light ....

But notice how close I have to keep their head distance from the camera - otherwise the Av would have had to been higher - and I would have either had to turn my lights up more or use a higher speed film - But I like using as low as possible for the best print quality ..
