I use PSP9 so if you can explain this with that in mind great.

I've gotten many comments on focus. I've used both manual and AF and they all look quite in focus. Especially my AA challenge, and it's getting tons of focus issue comments. SO, there's one of 2 things, the first, is that blurry looks sharp for me, which I don't think is the case, and the second, is that when I reduce images it looses focus. In this challenge, I went down 5% at a time... in previous ones I went direclty to the size I needed. Most images are nearly full frame before I reduce from my rebel, and reduce to typically 640. What am i doing wrong?

Can someone push me in the right direction, because it's really starting to annoy me that my full size image is sharp, but the submission is trash.

rob, im not familiar with the program you use, but you need to look at the quality of the resized image.

when you take your full sized image and crop it to your liking then set the image size to 640x??? or what ever, there should be some type of "quality" slider or setting to make the file size around 150K, each program is different, but they work basically the same.

I hope this helps, try looking in the help file of your program for the quality settings

You don't need to do incremental downsizing. You DO need to run a sharpening filter on the downsized image. The equivalent of PS "Unsharp mask" is usually best. This will pick up contrast for ya as well. A lot of what people see as "softness" is the lost of contrast as the details get obscured at lower resolution and image size.

Rob - When you save your .pspimage file (which is what I assume you're working with from doing a file/save copy as of your original), use file/save as - then choose jpeg as the type, the you should see a button in the bottom right corner 'options'. Select 'options'. In the options dialog box, deselect 'Save EXIF Information', set the compression factor to 1, then click on the bottom right button 'Run Optimizer'. This will give you a dual-pane dialog box. Move the compression setting up until you've reached the 150k limit. Save the file.

As Robert (bear_music) pointed out, you should run the USM on the new jpg image file you just created. Menu 'Adjust/Sharpness/Unsharp Mask'. After sharpening the image file I usually do a file/save as again and rerun the steps I mentioned above (Run Optimizer, etc...) to make sure that the file size is still within 150k limits for submitting to a challenge.
