I'm about to buy a cheap set of close-up filters, I have a 50mm with a 52mm thread and a 70-210 with a 62mm thread.

Is it worth me getting the filters in 62mm (and a 52-62mm step-up ring) to be able to use them with both lenses or should I just stick with 52mm?

I've not used close-up filters before so I don't really know much about it, I'd imagine that I'd use them with the 50mm more than with the 70-210mm.

Cheers :)

I bought a cheap set too - at my largest size (which is 77mm) and then step-down rings for another lens. If you can't affort the bucks for a real macro lens, I think that they are great! You can also get extension tubes - they go on the other end between the camera and the lens and so one set will work with everything. With tubes, you get a closer focus range, but you lose some light.

I'd go with the close-up filters rather than tubes. I find that I only use them on my longest lens (to get really close) so I'd highly recommend the 62mm.
