For some reason in the "Print" area the images are dropping down to far. The "Gallery" seems to be fine. I think the problem lies in the header for the eCart module I'm using. it is on my list :)
Originally posted by jemison: I liked the overall look and function of your site. I did find it frustrating, however, to have to scroll down with each new image. Very slightly, but I couldn't quite see all the image without scrolling. I use 1280x1024 screen. Perhaps if your header was just a couple of lines less high the whole image would fit. |

I have tried several calendar modules and I keep coming back to the one I have now NuCalendar. It does not do everything I want to but that is one of the bugs with using open source apps. It is not easy to show for example a photo contest in the events that runs from Jan 1 to July 1.
I had one module called Kalendar that I think was out of Germany it did everything I wanted, but the format did not agree with my site and I do not have the code experince to go in and fix it.
Originally posted by dacrazyrn: by the way...where did you get the calendar module? seen a few, not sure on their functions when looking for info.
Finally got all this stuff up and working on my website...now to figure out how to integrate all my "design" ideas, and find where they go. |

The only reason would be that they are both PHPNuke and use the same modules, blocks and etc. Moodville did a nice job setting up Danny's site.
I only wish I had some of her code talent to finish my site :)

I mentioned above I had a module called Kalendar that did that but the format did not agree with my site and I had to remove it.
I have not found and survey/pol modules that over a variety of features. The one I have is pretty much standard for PHP.
The main purpose for my site right now is just a Gallery or samples of my work. It gives me a location on my business card for when I do arts/craft shows and etc. When I finish it will have a somewhat less obvious option to purchase prints of my work. It's main purpose right now is to help support my hobby not as a professional business or services. If down the road I decide to expand and offer various services I will then add that to the site. I had to start some place :)

With the Poll, I think it might be in your best interest to withhold the number of votes until it reaches a certain number, your site looks very professional, then you get the feeling that no one really uses your services.
...just my thoughts |

I think the looks of PHPNuke is going to be a matter of personal taste. I like the looks of it. I visited a lot of professional photographers websites when I was looking for ideas and etc and I have found that some that paid good money to have their sites coded are very boring.
From what I have read the main security problems seem to be with the chmod or rights that are set incorrectly and or are running off a personal web server with poor security controls.
As for the sales no information is taken that someone would not post else where on the internet. The purchase with PayPal option uses PayPal's secure SSL (https) site so there should be no problem with that.
The main purpose of my site right now is to support with my hobby. I do not at this time offer professional services only if asked by friends or family. Thus the reason for trying to put a hold on the cost. If I did offer professional services I might then consider paying someone $1,200-$3,000 to design and code a site for me.
Prints Menu:
I have not checked this out yet but it is on my big list. I think it is in the header that the ecart module is adding to Gallery. The Gallery portion seems to work fine. The Prints area where the add to cart button shows up is where the problem seems top occur.
As for the ads I don't think I have that many the main one is my associate with Amazon and that is only an attempt to show a good offer on Photography related materials. I certainly do not make enough money of them to even bother with.
As for the Amber Alert that is something I feel strong about and it will stay.
As for the gallery link I linked to the first image in the gallery becasue I did not like the way the main gallery page embedded with the site. It looked less professional in my opinion and it forced the right sided blocks off the page.
As for the cart buttons they come from the ecart module embedded with Gallery. When I finish there will only be a Gallery option and the cart buttons will considerably smaller and less noticeable. There will be an add to cart option on most all the prints. The "Prints" menu will disappear. My son is trying to work with me to rewrite the code for the cart. But like most young computer profesionals his spare time is very limited :)
Thanks so much for all your great comments and ideas. I have added them to my list and will keep them in mind while updating the site.
Originally posted by TechnoShroom: I'm not sure of the purpose of your site so my comments may not apply but here is my 2 cents...
PHPNuke sites scream unprofessional. If your main goal is to sell photos, you may want to consider another CMS that doesn't have as canned a look or see if you can further modify your current installation. PHPNuke sites also have the reputation of being very insecure. Whether or not this is the case with your site, people will still be hesitant to make online sales from a site where they feel their information isn't secure.
Clicking on links in the prints menu brings up the images centered vertically. Which, at least on my screen, means you don't see the image unless you scroll down. I would hurry to remove this since you plan to anyway.
Too many ads and fluff. They clutter the page and stretch it without enough content to fill the empty space. Again, it looks unprofessional. Instead of having all the calendars and links on every page I would move them off to their own pages so they are less of a distraction. Other items like hit counters, surveys, and the vote for my site stuff should just be ditched all together.
It might be nice for the gallery links to go to a gallery rather than the first image in the gallery. You may also want to heavily modify gallery. It comes stock with a very cluttered look. Lots of lines and links and whatnot that take away from the viewing experience.
I also see that there is a view cart button on every page but no button to add an image to the cart. Makes it impossible to buy something. When you do get to the cart though it looks nothing like the rest of the site. When you get finished with your site it should look seamless. |

The ecart module I added to Gallery was nice but somewhat crude.
As it stands right now you can not set multiple price options for crop ratios (i.e 5x7, 8x10, and 8x12) and various print finishes (Matte, Glossy and Lustre) with in the same gallery. I had to separate them as I have now. My son is trying to help me rewrite the code to allow for this.
Another package I was looking at that would allow for a Gallery and eCart options was Oscommerce. But that again is going to require more code worl than I can do or my wallet will allow for :) I have seen some very professional galleries done using the Oscommerce package.
This is one I had bookmarked and aside from the annoying google ads it is not to bad. I have seen some that were a lot better.

My 2 comments are:
1. You seem to have your images divided into pictures that we can look at and pictures that we can buy. I don't think people go to a site thinking that they really want an 8x12 image, but they might go to a site thinking that they want a nice Bryce Canyon photo. You probably should have your photos organized primarily by type or subject and then have an "Add To Cart" button on every single image. It's not a bad idea to allow people to sort or search by image size in case someone has a certain space or fame that they want to fill, but otherwise I think you should just organize and sell your photos by subject.
2. Charge more for your pictures. They're pretty good. :-)
Good luck with the site! |

So I have been messing with PHPNUKE (7.6 now) for the last month and have my site almost to what I want...besides adding some more photos and tweaking some wording etc.
My big problem is that ONLY on Windows Internet Explorer 5+ (maybe lower), the main frame gets SHOVED down to the bottom of the screen. Has anyone else had this and how to fix? anyone want to take a look? I am at my wits end.
Only other thing that I think that could be is from the JavaScript I put in....but it is all in the head.

i'm not positive, and don't have time to really go through the code.
but with a quick look you might want to mess with your table configuration. it look slike your left hand table is below the main table in the code. i've had this issue with IE and tables before.
my solution has been to nest the tables inside a parent table.
just a thought.

thanks, will take a look at trying that (is php and still learning that a bit at a time.) I don't expect anyone to look through the code (is a mess to look at) anyway.
Just confuses me that works on all other browsers except stupid IE 5

I haven't read the whole post so sorry if I'm offering suggestions you've received already.
Having dial-up, I found it a bit time consuming and annoying to have to view one photo at a time with no preview. I would have preferred a thumbnail gallery for each of your portfolios.
People seem to have no time at all anymore, and that instant gratification thing is huge. I've read that for each extra page that someone has to click through on a website, you lose like another 20% of your traffic. Make it as simple and fast as possible.
Even for people with cable or DSL, if they could hit a gallery button and have the whole portfolio load as thumbnail previews ( or slightly larger), they could go right to the ones that serve their need or catch their eye without having to go through ever single image one at a time.
I'd also choose a different and perhaps smaller header. Your photos are earthy, outdoor, landscape photos. Your header is a nighttime, bright lights of vegas type shot which doesn't blend with the galleries at all. Create a header that compliments your photography, not contrasts it.
Just my two cents. |

One thing I couln't find was a thumbnail view. I find that good becuase I can look at the larger images that most interest me.
BTW, I love your Bryce Canyon shots |

well you'll likely have issues with one browser or another unless you can spend eons coding for everyone. in general i code for IE mainly - try a hit logger that keeps track of browsers - you'll see 70% or more are using IE 5+. so spend expend 70% of the effort toward IE, and 10% toward the 'aftermarket' browsers. not to say i'm a microsoft fan - but it's blantantly obvious they have the market share in the web browsing arena.

Its half way down off my screen. I think you have a centering effect moving it. I couldn't see the code to tell though.

Guess I confused some people here...New thread here.
Thought I would cut down on the clutter of more threads.
Soup-this (phphnuke)is a content management system that is Open Source, so only tiny bits that I have changed are what I am responsible for...it does have a hit logger and I am aware that poeple just buy their computer and use that POS Browser. (C: Thanks. NOt sure what is up with IE 5, but I think these guys would have coded for it. anyway...

i have never used php nuke before and only have minimal experience with php, but when i looked at your code i was completely floored. there is a crap load of code there with almost no comments. try and break up your code a bit with some line breaks and add some comments for everyone to see using something like
echo "";
this will make it much easier to edit when you need to, and if you dont want anyone to see your comments, in the php code, just put a // infront of a comment like
//comment
sorry i couldnt solve your problem, but hope this helps

I like the sign in , the counter is what I really think you did well with.....
I think I will put off finishing my site when the kids go start school.. just kidding I am trying thoughh...
