Hi,

This is my first post and I hope someone can help me. I just did a virtual tour with a wide angle lens on my Kodak DX4530. It is a .65 lens. There was so much barrel distortion that I couldn't stitch the photos together. Is this normal??? If so, why would anyone want to use a wide-angle lens? Is there something I'm supposed to do to eliminate the possibility of this kind of distortion?

Thanks for any feedback!!

You can use PTLens to fix the distortion. It can also fix vignetting. There's a Photoshop plug-in version, and a stand-alone version too. Best of all, it's free! :)

In theory a "rectilinear" lens should not have barrel distortion, but as you go very wide, there will almost always be some. In fact, really wide rectilinear lenses tend to greatly distort objects that are off-center, even though they keep straight lines straight.
You should still be able to stitch teh images, but you might have to jump through a few hoops to do so.
First, you should look at the software you are using to stitch. Can it cope with the distortion? Good software is very good indeed at compensating for this. Second, you'll need to determine whether you images might benefit from pre-processing to remove some of the distortion. This might be easier said than done, but if there si perspective distortion (because the cam was tipped up or down slightly) this is easily removed and can help greatly with stitching. Third, make sure you give you software as much information as possible. Many stitching packages benefit from (or require) info like the lens field of view in order to stitch properly.

PTLens is invaluable, but only if your cam and lens is suported, otherwise not as useful. The Kodak DX4530 is not in the list, however.

Tina is your wide angle adapter lens a kodak sanctioned Retinar or is it along the lines of Opteka or one of the others found on let's say Ebay? The third party stuff glass isn't the finest around and a lot of those adapter lenses are closer to Fisheye than Wide Angle.

Try Panorama factory. It does a great job and automatically adjusts for barrel distortion.

This is a crop from a 6 image panorama--so about 5 images here from my old Canon G2 at its widest setting.
