this is my first entry here for critique, I took this picture in a domestic animals park in Iceland, my camera wasn´t set for action shots because I had just been shooting indoors but I got fhe focus on the beak and feet so I am pretty happy with the shot, even though it´s a little moved.

so there are 3 pictures no critiques well the thread isn't doing much for ya is it.....lol
if i had to say something was wrong with it it would be the strange focus and the head not being shown....
i really think if u had missed the focus all to gether it could pass with some slight editing as a painting.....ie if u ran a water color of scetch funtion on it.....
the focus however is alittle distracting since nothin but the feet and beek are in focus your eye is drawn to those objects rather than the rest of the bird or the setting....
my honost and somewhat harch opinion is that it was a lost discisive moment.....and now is just a bad snapshot.....
it has great proposition for being abstract "digital art" though and i think that is what u should do with it....
_brando_ that wasn't mean.....was it?

WOW nice pictures you 2.. looks just like mine ;)
but for the critique.. well I expected to get more of them ???
I read through a few critique threads and most people got quite a bit of critique both good and bad, I was hoping for.. well.. one hopes for the good bit, but the bad is just as important to learn from :) |

But seriously, this is the kind of picture that means more to the photographer than to the rest of the audience. Brings the moment back for us.
The snapshot comment was on the money, I think, but that doesn't mean it's a bad image. Just that it won't win any awards.
Actually, I like it, but not enough to buy a copy.

Hmm..
Noting that it was taken mostly on the fly.. ha ha.. fly.. oh so funny. Anyway.
I really enjoy the different perspective of the bird. Its at first off-putting because I usually expect to see a head/face when enjoying bird photos, but I think the unique position this particular duck is in actually gives it some dynamic flair. The wingspread is gorgeous really, the play of grey, white, brownish and black its actually quite nice and might have been missed in a different photo.
The focus is fairly good in my opinion as is the use of natural light (not much choice there though eh?). I think one of the other big problems, at least for me, is the composition. The craziness of the bird's position is the focus of the image but you have all this other unfocused background cluttering up the way before your eyes center on the duck in flight.
The background itself too is a bit uninspiring, with the chainlink fence 'n the like, but over all I think the image is growing on me. I definitely like the quirky strangeness of the duck more and more.
Hope this helps some. :) |

DanSig,
Very nice capture. As LucidLotus stated one would want to see more of the face, head, and neck of the bird but the unique symmetry of the ducks wings makes me focus there. Nice colors and a great shot to catch in flight. |

I am going to disagree with what most of the other people have been saying, I think this is a great shot, and if the face was visible it would not be nearly as good. Part of what I look for in a photo is does it interest me at some level, this one does because it is not the way we are use to seeing a duck this way. A photo that lets us view something in a new way is worth a lot. Photography can be more then just artistic photos, it can catch a view of the world we might not have seen before. I think the timing was perfect for this shot.
