I remember a post a while back comparing the dynamic range of the 300D vs the 20D. Since the search function sucks, I can't find it again.

Does anyone have this photo comparison, or can you find that post?

Thanks,
Chad

Oh right! I have a hard time believe the camera is tha much better. I can see for extreme cases but for things I shoot..I don't think so. But then again I LOVE my Camera!

I've been wondering about that too. Also, does anyone have any preliminary info on the dynamic range of the 350 vs. the 20 vs. the 300?

I think the dynamic range of the camera might have more to do with the processing chip than the sensor itself. From Canon's site: "Canon's DIGIC II image processor... boasts improved color reproduction of high-saturation, bright subjects, improved auto white balance precision, and wider dynamic range in highlight areas." Both the 20D and the 350XT have the DIGIC II processor.

That said, I think the Fuji Finepix S3 is the current king of dynamic range.

I donĂ¢€™t know if the 20D has more dynamic range or not but having owned and used both the digital rebel and 20D for a while I will say that the 20D seems to be able to be set to a lower contrast setting giving more latitude in high-contrast lighting situations (bright sunlight for example). My guess is that the 350D will be similar to the 20D in the aspect.

Here are some comparisons of the 20D's dynamic range to the 10D's (follow the next several pages also, and there's a comparison with the D70 as well). As i understand it, the 300D's sensor has a lot more in common with the 10D. I don't know much about the 350D but i suspect you get what you pay for.

Not so sure this is true. The Kodak 14N is the king with 12 stops and the E-1 is next with 10 stops. Not sure where the S3 comes into play but the Canon 20D 300D 10D all come in about 8 stops.

It is the same sensor.

WHere did you get the figure that the 14N is 12 stops and E1 is 10 stops?

I said, "I think." The S3 is designed for wide dynamic range. From THIS review: "My conclusion: the S3 Pro joins the D1x and SLR/n as excellent high-key cameras. ...In scenes that would challenge a D70, the S3 Pro does just fine once you find the magic exposure."

it is [ S3 pro ] supposed to be top notch for dynamic range due to the way the sensor is designed. it uses more of the surface area of the sensor as light receptors. basically grabbing the same light twice and comparing the values. i don't have the article/review i read handy. but it has 2 stops dynamic range more than most other high end digital cameras.

there is a wide dynamic range option you can turn on or off depending on the subject matter. the article was in studio photography and design.
