Surrealism is defined in a Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, tenth edition, 1995, as "the principles, ideals, or practice of producing fantastic or incongruous imagery or effects in art, literature, film, or theater by means of unnatural juxtapositions and combinations." Additionally, surrealistic is defined as "having a strange dreamlike atmosphere or quality."
For what that's worth...

LOL I obviously did not get anough sleep last night. I had to look at this for about 30 seconds, scratching my head, before I got what was surreal about it. |

You're not alone. Six people gave it a two or less in the Lucky Seven challenge. Hello? You did eventually figure it out, though, being clever and all...

Correct. Each print is #25 out of 350, and signed by Mr. Melting Clocks himself. |

When I saw the Surrealism Challenge I instantly thought of Jan Saudek. Most of his work consists of nudes in a surrealistic view. Here is an example.

"Surrealism is above all a state of mind, it does not advocate formulas. The most important point is to put oneself in the right frame of mind. No Surrealist is in the world, or thinks of himself in the present, or believes in the effectiveness of the mind as spur, the mind as guillotine, the mind as judge, the mind as doctor, and he resolutely hopes to be apart from the mind. The Surrealist has judged the mind. He has no feelings which are a part of himself, he does not recognize any thought as his own. His thought does not fashion for him a world to which he reasonably assents. He despairs of attaining his own mind.
He despairs of attaining his own mind." Antonin Artaud |

i'm curious as to the general concensus here...would any of you consider a beautiful landscape to be surreal?

A landscape can be surreal if done properly but don't be surprised if it gets voted down.
I'm looking for and voting higher for the images that give a surreal feel by photographic procedure eg long exposure, motion blur or even macro.
Before I get shouted down my reasoning for this is simply my preferred taste and belief that these types of images are harder to pull of then a staged surreal image. |

He has been, and links provided to some of his amazing work. See Kadi's post in this same thread about it.

Just curious.. if I knit a sweater while standing on my head, does it make it a better sweater? (Simply because it was a more difficut task?) I doubt so... I hope you'll take this into consideration, or not... whichever you see fitting...
Before people start jumping down my throat, I do understand there are two sides to every arguement... and this is not "my stand" simply somewhere I thought I could show the other side and win, lol!

I understand what you are saying but my take on this challenge is just that "my take" and I'm sure there are plenty of other views on how surreal can be shown.
My point is that I feel it takes more photographic expertise and skill to make a picture look surreal as compared to a surreal subject matter and accordingly I will tend to vote these images higher but hey don't lose any sleep over it I'm just one vote of many. |

Think Fast!!!!
Alright, ready for this? Philadelphia has a Dali exhibit going on right now. How conveniant that this challenge comes up. So last Saturday, I was out with friends and I guess you could call this person a friend of a friend. He is a local actor who is promoting the Dali exhibit. Not only did I not think to photograph him (because he looks like Dali, moustache and all, but he captures his mannerisms in photographs that he has done for local papers and such) but I had my camera on me. What a character I could have had for a surrealism photo. Damn! So then Sunday, I went to the Dali exhibit, because I have been dying to see it since it opened, and wanted to wait until the crowds died down a little, but alas, it was sold out.
My other idea for this challenge involved 10 specifically costume dressed people, a beach, a sunrise, 3 oversized wrenches, a ball of cheese, a painting frame, a gospel choir, 4 clowns, a truck with a tree growing out of the bed, a life sized android, santa claus, a boat without oars, 6 druids, a palm tree, a rabbi holding a gigantic painting of a priest holding a gigantic painting of an alien holding a gigantic painting of a black nonolith holding a gigantic bowl of soup filled with tiny people and a few insects, and one medium sized kimono dragon brushing its teeth with a baby crab. Oh, and a little bit of seagull poop, but that would have been the easy part since we'd all be on a beach.
So yeah, I think I'm going to have to sit this challenge out because I don't have the time or the resources to make this happen, and I should have been thinking last Saturday whilst the opportunity for something unique presented itself. I'm still kicking myself. |

OK, that was a bad plan. I found a dragon, but I can't get him into the kimono. The clowns did a number on the android with the wrenches, and Santa got into a heated argument with the rabbi and they trashed two of the paintings. It just wasn't pretty. |
