I received this letter in my e-mail today:
Sammie Carraher
I saw your Picture of the Day on the PowerShot User website, [//www.benel.com/powershot], and wanted to contact you.
Can I have your permission to copy your photo and make it into a desktop screensaver for everybody to enjoy? As for copyright protection, your name will appear on the bottom right corner of your photo. The screensaver is downloadable at //www.my-screensaver.com/screensaver.html.
I will make the link to download the screensaver available as soon as I have the permissions from the selected POTD photographers.
Thanks!
K.W.Loong
Does this sound like it's true or is it a 'scam'?
My picture of Pink Roses was the Powershot Picture of The Day during the pink challenge.
Thanks,
Sammie |

I don't have a full answer to this, but I know that my basic philosophy is to beware of people or businesses that approach me, vs. I find them. If you go forward with it, I would first just do whatever checking out I could and go by your gut feel after that.

I'm not sure I understand how they'd be scamming you with this e-mail...? Sounds pretty straightforward to me... you can pretty easily see what they're doing by visiting the web page. |

It is still getting you to visit a solicited website. Have you checked it out?

The site seems pretty honest, download one of the screensavers, virus check it and watch it to see if there is any advertising or whatever on it - I'd be pretty chuffed, the pics look good on existing ones. |

Looks legit to me. She makes free screensavers out of POTD's, she has a number of them downloadable. Webiste looks like an enthusiastic amateur, not a 'scam'.
Here's her introduction, on the site:
Welcome to My-ScreenSaver.com. My name is Loong Kok Wei and I am from Malaysia. Well, I know to some people, the name might be difficult to pronounce but that's okay since I will never find out about that anyway. The reason I created this website is because I wanted to provide downloadable screensavers to visitors. In the beginning, I thought of selling screensavers and fantasized that I can earn truck loads of money but I soon realized that making people want to dig money out from their pockets with this simple website is not easy.
So, anyway forget about truck loads of money. I have now decided to provide free screensavers as well as wallpapers for visitors to download if they like. I have also put up my photo gallery and new photos will be uploaded from time to time, hopefully. All photos in the gallery were taken with the Canon Powershot A80 and Canon EOS 20D. The A80 is my first digicam and I bought it in October 2003. A year after that, I got to own this awesome monster, the 20D. At the moment, I am specializing in taking wildlife/nature photos. Maybe my appetite might change. I don't know.
Above all these things, photography helps remind me of how wonderfully and perfectly this world was created for us to enjoy.
If you'd like your picture to be seen by a ton of people, I'd say go for it.
Robt.

Ya I got the same email and I believe Imagineer did as well. The guy does a monthly screen saver with the Pictures of the day for the powershot site. If you get POTD over there this guy will ask your permission to put it in a screen saver. Your name stays on the photo and he is not charging for the screen saver so I don't believe it to be a 'scam'.

Thanks everyone, I wrote back and said it was okay to use my picture. I never visit screen saver type sites as I've heard they are hotbeds of viruses and worms and things like that.
Thanks very much for your comments and opinions. |

I actually just went over there and downloaded the one I was in...actually a pretty neat little slide show thing that they have done. You see the "All Photographs are Copyright of the Photographer" three times as you install it, and the different photographers name is displayed on each of the slides.
