The Time challenge - apple being eaten - how do you get a nice sharp focus on a distant object and a gradual focus on nearer objects. I mean I understand focusing on the apple that's farther away, but I don't understand how it changes from light blur to more blur as it gets closer (to the end).

Waiting til the challenge is over and then addressing the photographer of that specific shot might be the best way to find out how it was done. |

It's not my photo,
but
It was done using DOF - Depth of Field.
DPC has it's very on tutorial about it.

I think it might depend on the lense you use, if you use something capable of f/1.4 or lower with a short focal length 20-50mm with manual focus you can get shuch effect.
