I have no doubt it was scan related. You say you printed this once. This particular file? Or an actually print from Adams' negative? Didn't you say you worked with him at one point? You should tell us more about your association with him, if this isn't being too forward. It would be nice to hear about him from someone who actually knew him as opposed to biographies and what not.

I printed that image from his negative under his supervision. 20x24 inches, if memory serves. Ansel had a long-time printer that worked for him full-time when he got older, and occasionally when this person was unavailable and an order had to be gotten out I filled in. The process of production printing was too demanding for Ansel in his declining years; there was a tremdous demand for his work and it was selling for very high prices, and he needed to earn the income for his family and their future. So he supervised. Nothing left the darkroom without his approval.

Hey Im having a hard time getting a good biographical website on Ansel Adams. I was curious about him after finding out who he was when the challenge was introduced. I wondered...what made him the best? Of course, he must of traveled a million miles in his lifetime to capture those amazing landscapes, but what was his technique? his trademarks? I heard he was the first to shoot at Apertures as small as F 22

Ansel Adams, PBS Home Video

I bought this a few months ago. Will watch it again for inspiration for this challenge.

You would find that many of Adam's photographs would not do well at DPC.

His most famous works are pioneering photography for the early to mid 20th century and, as such, suffer from grain and quality issues that would be criticized resulting in low scores at DPC. Technology has come a long way since then.

I don't think you will find quality issues with any of Adams' works. You may need to look closer if you think a digital printer has anything on what he was doing in the darkroom.

Tell me, do you think this image would score high at DPC?
Possible Ansel Adams DPC Entry

I think you may be confusing the quality of the scan with the quality of the original. I found at least one other version of that image that was equally as bad, but obviously different (it had banding issues more than grain/noise).

Hi. I'm new here, not to photography. I have a Photo Group on Yahoo. I need an Ansel quotation, to teach a lesson. Ansel said, in effect, that a perfect photograph contains all the elements necessary to convey the photographer's message, and no elements that detract from that message. Can anyone tell me the exact quotation? I have the essence, but not the exact words.

Thanks in advance. Now I will browse and enjoy the site.
