this is straight out of the camera and the result of me playing with my new 50mm 1.8 lens.

Question is...why are the edges of the flower glowing a different color than the rest of the flower?

Do you mean the edges of the farthest petals against the BG? If so, it's just the fact that they are OOF. The color of the petals is mixing with the black of the BG to make a darker shade of orange.

Could also be the automatic sharpening from the camera. USM gives the edges a bit of a glow. The camera auto-sharpening could create those as well.

so opening up the aperture will fix this?

That will probably help. Try it and see.

I'm kind of new to photography, but I think to put more of the flower in focus you would close down the aperture, not open it up. Right?
