I have a 580ex flash and a Canon 20D.
I sometimes use the flash in programme mode. Most of the time the photos are very underexposed sometimes by 2 stops.
Does anybody have any handy tips on how to use the 580ex ( eg best setting etc) ? |

Could be a number of thngs. After a good read of the 580EX manual, which is very enlightenting, I'd start by doing a few tests.
First make sure that there is no flash exposure compensatoin set on the camera body. Set the metering to the center point only and take pix of a blank white wall. They should come out with the white exposed to mid-gray. Now place something that is roughly mid-gray in the frame in front of the white wall. Meter off that and the wall should come out close to white, the object should be properly exposed.
If you consistently get underexposure and you are sure you've eliminated possible causes in camera and flash settings, call Canon. I believe that there has been a flash underexposure problem with some 20Ds, but I don't know much about this. I do not have theis problem with my 10D, however it's easy to get underexposed flash shots with the 580EX if you are unaware of how the metering works.

Reading the manual (camera and flash) is most important. Different camera modes will put the flash into different modes automatically and can cause what many users refer to as 'unexpected results'.

I have been taking some experimental shots. On almost all of the decent flash exposures I have either had to increase the exposure by a couple of stops on the camera and or on the flash by 2 stops. I have also turned down my LCD brightness level to almost the lowest level. These appear to have worked. I am now getting wysiwyg ! At last.
I am still not keen on flash photography |

Hope this thread matures into lots of 'how to' tips, got my 580EX this evening and whilst I read will just have it on auto. First shots seem fine but would have helped if I'd turned the custom wb setting off after my light on white shoot lol.
