I have an old flash that I want to start using as a slave from time to time, and I'm not fond of buying AA batteries since I have quite a good stash of NiMH ones.
I have found that my flash works perfectly fine with regular batteries, but it's not working with the NiMH ones. I'm just curious if anyone knows the explanation behind that... I'm using 2300 mAh Energizers. I'm wondering if the flash could be picky because these batteries are only 1.2 volts compared to the regular 1.5s?

I use some NIMH in my 550EX and 420EX. They work great. I recently bought some Energizer lately, and they work as well.
I'm happy I can use rechargeables because I use them a lot in the studio.

Second thought, it seems to be working after all! I had a mix of 2300 mAh and other ratings in there at the same time, it turns out. Once I put just 2300s in there, it started working! Odd, but I'm not complaining :)

When in doubt, try following the instructions? : ) |

And where would I find these instructions? The flash pre-dates this type of battery, and I can assure you I don't keep the plastic doohickeys that come with the batteries :)

Every piece of battery-powered equipment I can remember buying warns against mixing battery types, or even those with different levels of charge remaining. The battery chargers do too. I often mark my batteries (usually with stripes) so I can tell which ones form a "set" together. |

Welp, I gotta say they ought to do a little better job of markin' them then. I see that some of the Energizers have the "2300 mAh" prominently marked, but I have a 2100 in front of me that you almost need an electron microscope to see that designation...
They're not making it especially easy for us to keep them straight if this is such an important thing! |

I know, although I usually try and buy them in larger packs and mark them with a Sharpie when I open them. I'm not so worried about the absolute value for each one, but just that I keep sets of two or four matched ones together. |
