Some people felt that my entry would be better in color.
I still think that the bridge gets lost in the busy orange and reds of the background when shown in color. The B&W also provides a much stronger contrast between bridge and sky.
Tell me what you think:

Thanks.

I didn't vote in this challenge but if I had I would've scored the B&W much higher than the color. But I am partial to B&W photos in general so take from that what you will. It's a wonderful image. :-)

I would rate the b/w an 7 or 8 while the color would have gotten a 5.
I entered a b/w but added lots of grain to try for an old antique and spooky look. My comments were "I like the grain!", "I hate the grain", "would be nicer in color", "would be nicer in stright b/w".
The moral of the story? Who knows. |

I prefer the B&W too, but I've always had the impression that the voting masses tend to prefer colour. |

i like the color better, the b/w looks equally as busy to me. i might prefer the b/w if you had converted it differently, something doesn't look true about it. i didnt get the chance to vote this week though. |

It's amazing to me that everyone likes B/W so much. The world is such a beautiful place and you all want to see it in dull black and white. |

Hi Dave,
You are right on the money with the world being a beautiful place, but in regards to B&W being dull, I think that at times it adds depth and emotion to a picture.
When we see an image in color, our brains have to sort out and choose what's important in the image to take center stage. Color often takes away from that process and makes the brain get a little too busy analyzing the picture as a whole. In B&W, an image can have a much more powerful feel ot it by taking away the added distraction of color. This doesn't work for every picture though. At times the color is the warmth.
Hard to describe emotional aspects and put it into words sometimes.

You are right on with your assessment of the color being a distraction Sander. The B&W is a far more powerful image.

Thanks for all your comments and insights.:)
My main personal 'problem' with the composition was that streetlight in front. The space between the tree on the right and the fence on the left is actually very tight. And because I couldn't go any wider with the lens I had no way to avoid it. :(

I think I like the grain. Without it the sky becomes so empty.

Well, it isn't a true depiction. Because of the negative blue in the channel mix; bright red becomes white, all other reds become nice shades of gray and blue becomes very very dark. So the sky looks the most strange. I like this effect and use it regularly. In this shot it was the most important to minimize the effect of all the red and orange. A regular desaturation or standard channel mix makes it look a bit blah... But that's just my opinion, if you want to you are free to edit the color version to show another version (if not, also ok). I always like to learn. :)

The world is such a dull place that I'd rather see it in beautiful black and white. :)
No, seriously I agree with what Brad said in his reply.
B&W can help to focus on form, lines, content but it can also make a beautiful color photo look very dull. It sometimes also helps to create a timeless or historic feeling.
In this example it helps to focus on the form/design. The colors add nothing:
In these examples it gives a historic or past feeling:
The last one is a bit extreme because of the editing...
And for the Best of 2004 challenge I simply used B&W because I felt it was a bit dull to enter the original color version or another crop from it:

Again, thanks for all your comments and replies.
