I have a Sony Trinitron 19" monitor. Today I woke up to find that the screen is darker than normal with large horizontal bands on it. I've checked all my video card settings and I'm pretty sure its the monitor... Degauss doesn't change anything, changing the refresh rate doesn't improve the situation. The monitor is about 5 years old. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

1. Try disconnecting the signal cable and cleaning all of the contacts.
2. Try disconnecting the video card and cleaning the contacts.
3. If you have a KVM switch, try bypassing it.
4. Slap the monitor around a bit.

Carry her to the gunnwales and toss her over; she's done... that's my reaction. Had it happen to me once, the tube was shot. By all means try what mick suggested, but don't get your hopes too high.

LOL Robert!
I agree BTW; after 5 years, the phosphors are likely pretty severely aged anyhow, so repair would be like poutting lipstick on a pig. You will be amazed at the difference a "fresh" monitor makes. A new 19" CRT is relatively cheap these days.

wow, this is very bizarre--but i woke up to the exact same problem this morning (on mine, the text is lighter and the bands fall wherever there is a line of text or an image)...with the same monitor. in fact, when i saw your post, i thought i was imagining things, because...what are the odds of that? :) but my monitor is only about 3 years old i think, which is a total bummer.

I think you're probably right. I'm kinda sad though, it's a huge flat screen monitor - I hate to see it go = ( Time to borrow my parent's old 15" piece o' junk

Thanks for the advice folks

Your problem is exactly like mine - that's where i get the bands as well. If you get it back to normal, please let me know what you did

Man, if you think 19 inches is huge... I've got an ElectronBlue 22 incher, and I wish THAT were bigger...

Heh, I don't think anything larger than 19" would fit on my desk = P (dorm room size)

Same thing happened to my monitor. Got it fixed for fifty bucks. Not a Trinitron mind you.

I did it once to my old 15" one, and it fell off the desk!
Then I bought a 17" Samsung syncmaster 753DFx. I love it!

I have the same tube, in a Mitsubishi monitor, that has problems of its own. If the bands you speak of start at the beginning of the text and then move across from there, a control for the guns is going out. As the refresh scan runs across the screen, it switches to white (all on) and has a hard time switching off again.

My monitor is almost 6 years old and a couple of months ago the phosphers took a drastic change for the worse. The display, what seemed to me to be sudded but probably took a week or so, became dingy and very slightly blurred. I have described it as looking through a thin veil.

3-5 years is about normal life for a CRT, so I certainly feel I have gotten good use out of it. Absolutely loved it until it until the problems started, and have been looking into another with a similar tube to replace it -- specifically the LaCie electron19blueIV. I am still looking for someplace local to see it in action and play with the buttons and knobs, though. I have been hearing nothing but good about it.

Ok, I need to update my situation - I went out and bought a 17" flat panel monitor and I have the same problem - could this problem by my video card? It too is 5 years old, Nvidia 64MB Geforce2. I can return the monitor, but is there an easy way to check that my video card is the problem short of buying and installing a new one? (edit, the card is AGP)

Thanks again (I actually hope it is the video card, they're cheaper to replace = P

If you get the same results with a new monitor, it definately sounds like a vidcard issue.

It worked well enough for my older games (hey, it was cutting edge when i bought it). Off to best buy again i guess.

Edit: problem solved, new video card did it. Now I can go office-space on my old one = )

Glad to hear you got your problem corrected. What video card did you decide on?

Xtasy (ATI) Radeon 9550SE (128 MB, $100). Not really intersted in putting a lot of money into my computer b/c of its age. The card is definitely an improvement though (for games that is).
