I need some advice and sample images on shooting show dogs for a friend of mine. What kind of photos/poses/angle should i be looking for? What bout location wise?

And is it dependant on the type of dogs i am going to shoot?

Tentatively should be a golden retriver, snauzers, terriers, shih tzu and a spainel (not so sure if the spelling is correct)

I like head shots, but if the owner of the dog is going to use these for promo then they will want full body shots. Head up, legs apart, tail erect, back straight, you know, just like if the dog was on the bench.

See if AKC has a web page with some images.

This is not based on any "real" facts, just my opinion.

I would think profile views would be best. If you have access to a white background or studio setting, then I would go with that too. Just my gut.

Like this.

Or the owner may want the dog in action if it is a hunting or sporting breed. Ask to go out with the owners as they put their dogs through their paces. Try to catch some good shots.

Owned and showed dogs for 20 years, most photos for promotional reasons were done by professional show photographers for wins at shows. Took hundreds ourselves tho for different reasons. You didn't say what you want them for but generally side poses are best multipurpose as it shows most of the conformation of the dog. Try a 3/4 angle with a slight view of front to side. Or find a structural strong point an emphasise that. The owner should help you out there if you don't kniow anything about dogs.
Background as with any portrait should not be cluttered or distracting, viewer should be looking at the animal not the scenery.
Don't have a scanner or I could sent thousands of examples. I used to publish a national breed mag. Akita World. You can pick up any breed mag alot of them at bookstores, browes thru and get ideas.
Hope that helps a little good luck!
