I was voteing on the Bridges II challenge and lots of the shots look like previous Bridge challenge entries. Do you think it is creative to look at the previous challenge and base your shots on these ? I know that good photographers will probably see things in the same sort of way but is it creative. Personally I don't like looking at past challenges this way as it fills my head with your ideas and when I come up with something I don't know if I thought of it or subconciously "stole" it.

i think looking at photos does give you ideas and we probably use them even if we don't realise we are. Personally if you're looking for your own creative approach i wouldn't look at specific types of photo (i.e. bridges) because as you say it will influence your photo very much and you willl end up with very similar results, unless you look at these photos to avoid the same old clichés (spelling) that is.

I'll have to go look at the first Bridges contest now!

Creativity is realtvie to the individual. Since the membership is in constant turnover, I think we always have a crows for whom the previously implemented ideas *are* fresh.

I think the focus of thie site is learning, and if looking at past challenges gives inspiration to try something new, then I'd definitely call it creative. We evolve by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Just a guess - but a bridge is a bridge is a bridge - seeing as not many people decided to go for the more creative approach to the topic and just photographed a structure used to allow passage over water it's no surprise that a lot of the shots look the same. In many cases people don't have access to a whole lot of photogenic bridges and may have even shot the same one as last time. The nature of the challenge is such that there aren't going to be too many inventive approaches - that is going to happen from time to time.

I personally tried a couple of more creative angles and the like - but the end results were more abstract type photos that people would likely vote down as not being immediately recognisable as a bridge.

Id like to add that I have gained 70 - 75% of my knowledge from the forums and tutorials on this site and I was not implying anyone is copying. Just wanted too know your view on this.
For example this image

was the result of one of the tutorials.(Thanks for that!) But as for challenges I like to get my brain ticking over. I never thought I would be
going about my life thinking "seperation" "seperation" or "bridges".
Thanks too you all.
