Did you convert it to Greyscale from the menu or have you tried things like Channel Mixer and the more advanced and difficult options?

Convert with Greyscale.
How do I use the Channel Mixer being that I am new to PS

Under the layers palette there's an icon for adjustment layers (half white half black). Click on it and choose Channel Mixer. Check the Monochrome option. Adjust the sliders to taste.
Also, before doing it, you can check the channels. Swith on individual channels to see the effect. From that you can decide how you are going to mix them.

In PS you have the layer/channels/paths platelet. In channels you can see the output of the Red, Green and Blue channels and in most cases the are quite different.
Sometimes it can be alright to convert to grayscale through some of thease channels but often it gives better results to use the channel mixer.
Go to Image > Adjustments > Channel mixer. Choose monochrome and mix the channels for the "best" result.
When you´ve done that you can adjust it better with Levels.
What I also do is making a copy of a background layer and make it an overlay layer with opacity around 50-80%.
