Sensitivity can be a good thing. When it makes us vulnerable to unfounded transgressions, it just hurts though. What is much worse is to grow tough and dumb. ;-/
I feel inundated by niceties. Whatever it may be that motivated a 'nice' comment, we can never be sure of. It is may be concealment of fact, a lazy comment, a flattery, a sincere compliment just short of articulation or a flip-in-reply trivium.
'Constructive' comments, too, can either be easily recognizable as such or very difficult to recognize. I' d invite anyone to put a fist through an image I offer for scrutiny. If they put holes though it, if it does not withstand the impact of an applied scrutiny, then, the image was rotten and the effort to uncover this fact was 'constructive'.
It is, I think, neither our work which is holy and inviolate nor its author, but the truth for which we ought to strive, if we want to arrive at some degree of insight into the nature of things, so that we can apply ourselves to a task with some degree of conviction.
If we want to grow tall, we welcome anything stimulating such an erection. If we want a sound and robust house to live in, we don't build on air. Let those who are bent on destruction, be thorough about it and honest, so we may enjoy both utility 'and' the luxury of kindness! :-)
