I would be happy to comment on 20% of the entries (thus far - that would be 84 comments.) However.............

Am I missing a critical piece of information when it comes to navigating my way through the submissions? Here's my procedure so far - look at thumbnails, read the title, select a photo that intrigues me, make a comment, rate it (is that the same as voting?), hit the back arrow (or try to guess which line will return me to the thumbnails), and start the process all over again.

I'm begging you - tell me I can check off just the ones I would like to view closer (and/or comment/rate), thus creating a slide show. Or........... can I start a slide show of all of them by clicking on "next" (only stopping to comment/rate those I choose to.)

Realistically, I just cannot comment on 500 photographs. It's already 400 pm and my camera is begging me to go out to play while the sun is still bright.

Thanks, Kathy

Here's something to try...

Select the thumbnail you wish to start with (by clicking on it)

Once you've voted (you don't have to comment to be able to rate a photo) then either rate the next one that comes up or click the arrows to the right of the 10 to get another image. Each time you click the arrows a new image is shown though since they are random ones you skip may appear again.

Why go back to the thumbnail page?

Well,
#1 You don't have to comment on every single photo you vote on. Look at the statistics of many people on this site. I've cast 3282 votes and made 1421 comments. They don't match up, and it would be hard find someone who did have that match up.

#2 Yes, you can press next to get a "slideshow" and only stop for the ones you like.

Plus, votes based on just thumbnails isn't really encouraged. What if there was an amazing shot that had a bad looking thumbnail? The vote would be based on how the thumbnail looks, not how the image looks.

For my voting, I just click on one of the thumbnails that looks intriguing, vote/comment on it and then vote on each image as it comes up. I spontaneously comment on ones that I choose.

Thank you both. That was part of my problem - I don't believe on voting by thumbnail either (have found too many unseen valuables when the large versions appears.)

And, trust me....... I didn't want to go back every single time. You just saved me hours.

Thanks, Kathy

I totally agree with Zoomdak, there is no way to determine if a picture is deserving enough to vote on or comment on by just looking at the thumbnail. If that was the case then we would just up load thumbnail size pictures. You can not see enough detail in a thumbnail to determine if it is a bad, average,or great picture.

The voting interface is designed to encourage people to vote on a RANDOM selection of images rather than cherry pick from thumbnails which ones to vote on.

This ensures that images get roughly the same number of votes each, though of course, comment numbers depend on how successfully each image illicits them from the voters.

As Zoomdak says, you don't have to comment on every image you vote on. And the system won't stop you from skipping images and voting only on those you choose to vote on but...

Images shouldn't really be judged on thumbnails, even initially, since some work better at that size than others. Images should be judged on their full size version alone. Thumbnails are really there to make the summary page more useful.

That helps people easily relocate an image they have viewed (at full size) previously in order to leave/ amend a comment or just adjust their votes if they have gone through and done a rough draft vote first.

Do the slide show thingy and blitz through all the images, sorting them into 2 groups with a 4 or a 6, say. You can do this rough sort very rapidly. The 6's are your potential high-scoring images, the 4's are the ones you think are below average.

Now you can go back and see all the 6's in a single group, and you can start clicking on them and revaluating/rescoring/commenting. When you've finished witht hat group, you can move to the 4's and rescore as many of those as need it.

This way, if you don't have tiem to vote them all "carefully", you've at least voted the high-end images and haven't hammered any of the rest.

If using Internet Explorer, you can also hit F11 to maximize your view of the photos.
