need help , i bought new ram for my computer , and replaced the old pair with the new pair and when i started my computer it didnt start , it just beeped , so i put the old ram back and it workrd fine , does anyone know if there some thing i need to do before changing ram thank you

Need more info...make of pc and of RAM

Was new ram seated properly?

Is it compatible with your PC?

First of all what type of computer, next what was the old ram, did you take the old ram to the store to make sure that the were compitable. There are so many different type of ram available. are you able to get into the bios of your computer if so you may have to change the timing of your computer for the new ram.

I bought it from ebay , from someone with great feedback , it fits perfectly , seated great this guy says it is compatable for my dell 8200 p4

Not a great deal of help, TLL061...

Memory comes in so many different configurations now that it is easy to buy wrong type! You need to know the correct type?

Is this a laptop with mobile processor?

Yes if is a home built all you have to do is hit the delete key just after the the computer starts and this should get you into the bios.

I think he refers to the Dimension 8200 P4 1.7 which takes RDRAM PC800. He was probably sold DDR

Are there stickers on your old and new RAM that give all sorts of info. Please post that info.

Yep, if it is desktop, you need DDRAM 266 mhz

Laptop is RDRAM.

Laptop use RDRAM... check out Dell site for nearest 8400 using DDRAM...that could be the problem, but I've never known laptop to have similar RAm to desktops??

old ram 128mb / 4 x2 new ram is 256mb 600

eBay says Rambus RDRAM...400 fsb...you need to check bios to see if it is set to fsb400

SOLUTION: contact Dell and ask if 600MHz RDRAM can replace your 800MHz RDRAM? If so, are there any BIOS setting you need to change?

I dont think that 600mhz ram works in a 800mhz system. I know that it does for sure the other way around.

If the ram actually fits in the holes then it's basically the right kind but it might still not be rated fast enough for your PC. In rare cases it might even be rated too fast. Another possibility is that your PC needs ECC or parity RAM.

If you put it in the PC and you're sure it was seated right (the lugs at both ends snapped into place properly yes?) and it still didn't work then send it back. It's either the wrong stuff or broken.
