I read somewhere that consumer film sales were declining sharply, but professional film sales had been steadily increasing. This was (I think) attributed to a few things. First, digital cameras which have 35mm equivalent (full frame) sensors are extremely expensive compared to their film body equivalents. Second, the raging debate over archivability of images. Probably much more to it, but those stuck in my mind.

I believe that film is on its way out in the consumer space, but I feel that in the prosumer / professional space we'll continue to see film for quite a while. It has some very relevant strengths for that audience.
