Hum... Here's what I think it takes to get a high score.
Gotta love the tabloid subject line..
The more of these you have the better you score will be:
1 -Sharp/clear image (an image that have lots of detail and no ever exposed/underexposed areas.
2 -A subject that no one sees very often: close up of bugs, wildlife, etc...
3 -A frame that has nothing in it that dosen't add to the image. (photo of a tree with powerlines in the background is bad)
4 - Tricks with tesselation (usually done with water drops)
5 - High detail contrasty BW images.
6 - Photo with a "how'd they do that" appeal
7 - Strong bright lighting/colors.
8 - Stop motion of interesting action (breaking of lightbulb is very popular here)
9 - Photo a attractive woman helps.
10 - A tasteful hint of sexuality will seal the deal.

I agree...with main emphasis on the last two...they will virtually guarantee high scores.
There are a couple of problems tho, first finding a number 9 model and getting her to agree to number 10!!

Also
Use as much screen real estate as possible 640 X 640 square aspect shots seem to do well here.
