I think after about 5 years the ccd starts to make red like a orangish color. But probably before then the camera will start to not perform as well which is why they have warranties

I think canons official numbers are:
300D: 50,000
10D/20D: 150,000
1D/1Ds: 200,000 or 250,000

this is when the shutter will go out and have to be replaced. about a $200 fix.
I am not positive on these numbers but I think they are pretty close. besides they are just estimates, and skiprow has broken that already!

edited to fix name...oops!

I have never heard of the reds going bad on a ccd and would be a bit surprised if it did.

Not me- I'm only at 24,000 or so. Skiprow had the big numbers, although I think he just sits in front of the TV and pushes the shutter out of habit.

I'd be suprised if the rebels ccd went bad also, considering it uses a cmos, not a ccd!

I haven't seen MTBF numbers from any camera maker, and even if you do they're hard to translate into a user experience. If you buy disks with a 1,000,000 hour MTBF you may experience a failure in 2 weeks, or not at all. Stats like that are meaningless unless you have a suitable population.

My take is that with good care and feeding a quality digital camera should typically last longer than you'll want to retain it unless you are shooting thousands of images per week. In that case, you should be using a higher-end camera as they are designed for deeper duty cycles.

I dont' think the CCD is your worry either... The shutter is a mechanical component, while the sensor is solid-state. Mechanical components always die faster than solid state.

This link has some information about ccd life span -//photography-on-the.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-289.html

The answer is a bit like how many miles you can get out of a car. If you change the oil and service it regularly, it will last longer than if you don't. The notion that the 10D will get 3 times the life of the 300D is sort of silly since they both have the same horrid weather seal, and dust is the great enemy of delicate moving parts.

But if you keep it dust free, blow out the stuff that does get in, and try not to kick it down the stairs, I might last a bit longer than the official party line. When the 300d first came out the general agreement on DPR was that the shutter was good for 10,000 activations. I have heard of very few failures at those low numbers, or at any numbers.

PS 27,600 so far

Not much in that link worth anything as far as I can tell. I have never seen any data saying CCDs have aging problems.

Well thanks for all the info.
I'm only at 15,000 since March 2004 so I should be fine for another year at least.
