I've had 4 positive comments on my Bridge entry with all mentioning a blown out spot that is not all bad, but frustrating .......I know and it bothered me as well. I was under the impression I couldn't burn for example, as it is basic editing only. Please tell me I'm right and that the commenters didn't realise I'm limited in this way.
I don't think there was a way to tone it down, without it effecting the whole image .

Well, yes and no, in my opinion. Yes you are right, basic editing rules prohibit you from toning it down. But no, it isn't that the commenters don't realize the limitiation, I suspect. I am guessing that they are pointing out what they perceive as a flaw or an area for improvement (nevermind the basic editing restriction).

So far I only have 1 comment, and am wondering what is keeping my entry in the low 5's. Hopefully comments will come later.

yes, you're right, you cant spot edit or burn in basic. I don't know of any other way to tell you to fix a blown out spot (I have the same problem), but I am one that takes that into consideration when voting. Good Luck!

I don't think burning a totally blown out area will fix it. if it's completely blown out it will just be white -- and if you burn that it will become gray which will look worse.

yep you are right deapee I don't think it would have made a lot of difference. I'm on a good score but I feel it could have been higher if it wasn't for this flaw ......
Thankyou all who replied ! :-)

Another way to look at these comments would be that they are pointing out that since the image is less than technically perfect it may not be getting top scores. Since burnt out areas cannot be fixed, what you might do is try to take many pictures of the subject matter, using different exposures (hey, it's digital, all you're using is some memory, no problem) so that you get an image that is technically good as well as compositionally good.

Keep trying. And good luck.

That's the kind of thing I might comment on for your benefit, but unless it's a really widespread problem, I most likely wouldn't lower your vote because of it, since you can't spot edit.

I will. Not trying to be mean, but just because it can't be fixed in PS and still comply with the rules is no reason not to consider flaws in an image when voting. Most likely those flaws could have been avoided in camera to begin with.

The last thread I looked at tonight that was talking about comments was complaining that not enough people comment on the lower scoring images. This one is complaining because they do. They are pointing out a weak spot in your image. Thank them and take it as that.
