i am new--please help-i am shooting portraits -full body shots against backdrop--using sony dsc f717 camera--hotshoe is on for external britek strobes to fire - every time --picture is whitewashed out--too bright/ overexpoxed?--i have tried every setting on shetter priority mode and aperture priority mode--none worked--finally went to full manual mode and shutter is fastest set at 1000 and aperture at around f5.6 to 6.3--this works ok-but doesnt allow me to blur background like i want--cant understand why fastest shuter at 1000 is necessay for proper exposure!!!- 2 ps200 britek strobes with umbrellas lights are set at 1/2 power even and lcd show picture way overeposed/bright-washed out white-if set at f 2.8 or anything less than6-pics are fine if strobes dont fire(i turn flash off)--and i just use the strobes with model lights only as hotlights--but that defeats the puprpose of buying strobes!-please any help is deeply appreciated--thanks!!

Using strobes you almost HAVE to use manual mode. Your camera does not register or even know it is hooked up to them, so it will not meter for it. Need a lightmeter or just trial and error (as I do at this tme).
Do your strobes go down any more....if so decrease them, if not just move them farther away.
You may want to try to shoot around f5-8, and move the model farther from the backdrop, then you will get your blurred background.

Edit:see that it has full, half, and quarter. Try quarter power.

Turn the strobe power down more. Situate them farther from your subject. Shoot in full manual mode. Get a neutral density filter if needed to allow you to open your aperture more.

Good luck,
