hello, I was thinking about taking some shots of my girlfriend, but I'm not sure what I should use for a background, I'm thinking a WHITE background, should I purchase a white SHEET, and hang it on my wall? and what should I use for lighting, would a FLOOD light work? post your opinions... thanks |

Here is a start.
Here also
I've used queen sized black and white flat sheets before. Depending on your cashflow or needs, you can get higher thread count (I bought something like 180-and works well) to decrease the amount of "whatever" is behind it showing through. ie: because of the thread count, the lower it is, the more "transparent" it is. If you are really lighting up white, usually can't see through them. And black I never light at all....so.

WalMart has cheap white and black denim that should serve you well. A floodlight is likely to cast a harsh, unflattering light. You'd be better off setting up inside a large window or bright outdoor shade (not in direct sunlight) and using poster board or foamcare as reflectors to direct the light. Gold poster board reflected on the face will provide a nice warm tone. |

If it's your first attempt at portraiture you could start out with natural light. Find a nice park, place her in the shade (under a tree for example) and snap off some shots. Be sure to keep an eye on the background and also any light shafts or shadows on her face. Otherwise you could try indoors with natural light coming from a window. |

I wouldn't use incandescent unless they were well diffused and well ventilated. Not only are they very hot, their white balance is not ideal for portraits and your pictures will turn out orangy. Put them behind white bedsheets a few feet behind.

Whatever you decide to do: don't but a tie-dyed muslin (if not for her sake then for mine!).
