the best way to get rid of camerashake is to drink half pint of scotch before shooting.. that should numb all shaking.. and able you to get "soft focus" :) |

there is some really good advice here. there is one thing that i would also suggest, and i dont think it has been mentioned yet.
HOW you hold the camera itself can have great impact on image clarity, even camera readings. you would be amazed the difference better "posture" can make. one of the most helpful things ive learned is to make sure i hold the lens of the camera in the palm of my hand, as opposed to gripping it from the side. this really stabilises things. if you are like me it feels more natural to place my hand at the side, seems easier to turn the focus rings etc. but if you havent already, try forcing yourself to hold the lens from underneath - thumb on one side, fingers on the other. open you hand, palm up, and rest the camera on it... it should feel balanced and relatively stable.
heres (a rather poor) example i found, to give illustration:

When forced to take a sub-optimal shutter speed shot with nothing to brace against I will kneel.
Put your right knee on the floor with your left foot flat and slightly ahead of you. It should bring your left knee high enough to place your left elbow on your leg. Tuck your right elbow in close to your body and holding the camera as shown in Mattvardys picture pull the whole camera against your forehead.
It helps me, and I can drop to a kneeling position pretty quickly to snap off an otherwise missed shot. Sometimes it's still not enough, but it's better to have tried =)

What about delyed shot (10s for example). Focus, shot and you have 10 s to re-aim, sthrengthen your limbs hold the breath etc... |
