I adore pinup art- and of course, pinup photography. I would really love to learn how to photograph with that look and style. There is something about the color of 50's pinup photography that's almost.... hyper-realistic. Bunny Yeager's color pinups are a perfect example:

(This is very large and contains nudity)

This is a modern example- Jennifer Lopez was photographed in a series of poses that were all originally Varga girl paintings in the 40's & 50's. The photographer managed to acheive that "perfect" look and almost got the hyper-real color. Cindy Crawford did a similar shoot years back, I can't find any images from it. I remember the background was bright pink.

Anyone ever try to recreate this kind of look? How did you do it?

Oh, I hope someone does this!! My husband and I have all kinds of stuff from the 30's and 50's in our house and we love that art!!! Keep me posted, plese, if you start working with this. I would love to see the results.

Edit: What about "painting" in color on a partially de-saturated image? I know almost zero about PS, so just a thought.

Here are a couple more examples- they're not pinups, but the color is similar to what I'm talking about:

(This is actually from 1939!)

Yep. I think in this case the color is close to what I'm talking about and it becomes a matter of photographing "retro" looking subjects to get the right effect- if that makes sense...

I'm gonna have to try it.

Here is a mini tutorial I did up forever ago. you can mess with the colour levels to make it look however you want.

hope it helps.

Thanks for that Pedro! I think it works really well with Imagineer's image:

Because his dad has a timeless look about him!

Once I master this technique I'll move on to movie star glamour style black and whites: //www.lafterhall.com/hurrell.html

You can probably play around with the contrasts-by-color by using adjustment layers with Curves, applying curves to the channels separately. I would seem that you'd have even more control than with the Channel Mixer, which looks like it uses a version of the less-precise/flexible Levels controls.

I believe I've achieved something similar by making two layers of the image. Desaturate the bottom image and then set the top layer (still in color) to soft light. Or you can set it to multiply and play with the opacity of the layer. Hope this helps.

I'll give that a try, thanks Jen! In the meantime, here's a shooter that sort of does the kind of photography I'm talking about:

(SOME NUDITY)

It does seem that the subject and props are more important than the light/color for this kind of work. The color effects at least can be acheived strictly in PS.

Yep, it's a 50's car, but it looks like a modern photograph.

Cindy Sherman also has worked in the style of the 50s, in a satirical vein. I can't find her famous essay of life as a woman (housewife) in the 50s, but this link gives an idea of her work. Incredible artist, and wonderful photographer.
