How many Extention tubes would it take to get the 85mm to about 1:1 magnificiation? Also how much of the sharpness of the lens would be retained? anybody done this?

I bought the "package set" of 3 Kenko extension tubes, and I virtually never use anything but the very shortest one. I use it with the Canon 'plastic fantastic' 50mm f1.8 and I really like the bokeh, very smooth, but the DOF is extremely short -- fun to use with flowers and the like. My Tokina 28-80 has much more DOF and works quite well. With the 3-pc set you can well exceed 1:1.

Extension tubes don't cause so much a loss of sharpenss as an effective reduction in f-speed of the lens, which leads to long exposures. If you stop down and use a tripod, you'll be pleased.

BTW, I don't know what happened in the last 9 months, but I just checked Adorama, and the price of the Kenko extension tubes went up ~40%! I paid about $80, and they're advertised for about $130 now!

Try this interesting site - it is a lens calculator page. It will answer your question, i think //members.rogers.com/jul.loke/jlcalc.html

I just ordered these extension tubes off ebay for $24 delivered.

I also have a set of close up lenses/filters. I had a Fuji 602 with built in macro and super macro capability that i used a lot. I have taken (only) 2 pics with the close up lenses on my 50mm 1.8 and while nice, not quite the macro 'experience' i am used to.

I also understand you can reverse a lens ( like turn the 50mm around and mount it to the front of another lens) for macro-like pics. I have not tried this yet.

So what works best, when and for what?
