I didn't mean to imply anything negative by the "caricatire" remark, in case you thought I did, Brennan. A "caricature", by definition, exaggerates some aspect of the subject to an extreme. That's all I meant.
Regarding detail in the dark areas, I was unable to pull it believably out of this particular image. Perhaps either of us would have better luck working from the original. Ideally, yes, there would be a whisper of separation of tones in the silhouetted areas, perhaps not even visible at this resolution but there in the print...
BTW, in the Zone System that would be the borderline between zone 3 and zones 2 and 4. Zone 2 in a photographic print is gonna render absolute black, zone 4 is a highly-textured dark gray. Zone 8 is the last trace of separation between white and not-white, zone 7 has a little bit of highlight detail discernible.
