can you use other flashes for the 20D without ruining the camera? I was told by the company that sold my camera to me that I had to use the canon flashes or risk ruining my camera. I wanted a cheaper flash (quantary) for some snapshots, and they talked me out of it by telling me about possible camera problems. I'm a little confused now!

thanks

To fry the camera you need to have too much voltage as a trigger. If a Sigma or Sunpack flash asks for the same voltage as a Canon, the name on the label will have no effect on the flow of voltage.

Older flashes should only be put on your camera if you are certain what it's trigger voltage is. There are old Canon flashes that can fry a Canon camera. My 300D wants no more than 6 volts, and there are flashes that run from 25-250 volts. You might want to check out this primer from Photonotes on eos cameras and flash units. There is a link about 3/4 of the way down to trigger numbers for various flashes.

I have heard that the 20D has a better ability to deal with higher trigger voltages than the 300D ( 250v?), but the voltage is what matters, not the name.

This topic was dealt with in the 20D forum at DPReview and if a salesman tells you only one brand can solve a problem, remember he is there to sell you something.
