I was looking at those earlier...every year, a mourner photo seems to win. I think more than half of the time, anyway...
Great photo...

Bumping for comments.
Question: How well do you think this picture would do in a DPC challenge? |

DPC is not a site for documentary or photojournalistic photography. I noticed that when I saw the 'chocolate' challenge when I first joined...I couldn't stand any of the photos and couldn't believe they won. I thought "I could just find any of these in a magazine"...then I realized that was the goal.
DPC is a great site to learn technical excellence, composition and all of the 'planned' aspects of photography. Sure, the emotive elements exist here, but we need to go elsewhere to learn them.
That's not an indictment, just a recognition of the culture here...

The first prize for sports action singles is pretty impressive.

It's a brilliant shot..under such stress I'm amazed at how well photojournalists can compose shots.
I would think "mourning" shots usually win because they convey emotions so well - as opposed to a shot of a flower or a cat. |

Try to see what some entered that didn't win, I saw some on TV, not online. Many of these would get a lot of sub-5 votes over here and were in my opinion total crap for photojournalism.

This one would be great for the current Separation challenge.
But knowing the voters here, it would end up with a 4.3

I think it's actually the 2005 WPP - even though the shots are all from '04, the award is named for the year it's presented.
It's always a humbling experience, going to the exhibition: it should be requied for everyone who is in the least interested in photography.

Artyste is right, it depends on the challenge.
This picture, which I submitted to the poverty challenge won the blue for that challenge, with a 6.943.
But this one, which I thought was a pretty good depiction of poverty as well, only got a 5.246 in the Best of 2004 challenge. Good for 373rd place, and in the lower 30th percentile. And, I'm guessing, it would have made the top 10 or 20 in the poverty challenge.
However, The first picture may have scored even lower in the Best Of challenge than the one I submitted, because it hits so hard, and people would have been put off by it. They're looking for more pretty pictures in a Best Of challenge than something that stirs the emotions like this.
Just my guess.

Sample comments. "too dark" "Try not to center the subject, learn about the rule of thirds." " Colors seem a bit flat." " Tornadoes are not what I think of as wind, nice shot but off topic" |
