We are given an image to download, and can do whatever we want with it (except add elements from another image). Since everyone starts from the same place, you will be scored on your interpretation and post-processing skills. |

So you are given a negative and your job is to make the best print. I like it :) |

Isn't there a website that already does this? DeviantArt.com?

Not quite, as far as I know you can add elements from other photos there. What skiprow referred to was keeping the integrity of the photo, not creating any monstrosity that your imagination could dream up.

I like the idea, but it will be boring to vote on :( and too many DQ requests and debates on if a major element was added/removed by using simple dodge/burn or other techniques. |

I think the editting would be a little more radical than just enhancing the photo.
I don't really like the idea though (at least not as a replacement for the weekly challenges.) Maybe as a 24 hour, 12 hour (or even something like 1 hour speed challenge with the time of release announce before hand) extra challenge though. But I still believe this is a photography site, not an editting one.

i propose this idea for a number of reasons:
1) as aznym noted, here's the negative, make a print (which is very, very much part of photography).
2) while there are a number of sites that cater to this full-time, there is no way anyone would ever consider this to be a typical dpChallenge.
3) given the right image, it would give rise to any number of post-processing interpretations. it should also be an image that would challenge the best of the shoppers.
i like the idea of a speed element to the challenge, and i'm sure that something could be done to make it work logistically and fairly, across 24 time-zones.
as far as DQ request, i would say that anything goes. since the voters will 'know' the image, they'll be able to use their votes as to whether or not someone pushed the limits. the only thing i'd say should be limited would be to actually add something from another image. again, the voters should be the judges of this challenge. |

How about if you could add components from one image that you take during the challenge period. |

I think it sounds good.
Here's a challenge: take my portrait as a starter, make me look good. ;)

We could always dodge your face into solid whiteness! :P
I think editing is part of the whole photography package but not sure it would work well as a challenge topic. If all people had to do was post process it then there would be a large number of entries and a large number of all the same images would be very tedious and boring to vote on. Although it is always interesting to see the editing threads in the forums and the various types of images that people come up with. |

this is a possibility, but i imagine the voters would quickly sort out the images that showed imagination and effort from the ones that didn't.

this is the clincher. i don't think this challenge would be a walk in the park to win.

I like the idea, but agree that 200+ edits of the same image would become monotonous rather quickly.
As a work-around for this, a number of shots could be presented and each entering an edited version of just one. This would keep the monotony to a minimum, and would remain fair as long as the images were selected with care -- no mountain vistas versus portraits versus flower macros for example.
Being able to post-process an image, without going over the top, is a valuable asset to any photographer -- and is very much a part of the DPC experience. I certainly agree it is time to focus on this aspect of digital photography.

these are some great ideas. this challenge would definitely take a little more planning than simply saying "bridges" or "bugs". i also had thought of offering a selection of images, but you would have to decide how many to offer: a choice of 2, 3, 5, or more?
as far as the monotony goes, i don't think it should be a deterrent to having the challenge...BUT, would this be a place to test out limiting the number of entries? |
