Hey, I'm about to buy a Canon EF 50mm1.8 mark I from somebody. They sent me a straight-out-of-camera sample photo and as far as I can tell it looks pretty good - but I'm used to the kit lens.

I asked the photo to be taken wide open, so there seems to be some softness to it but like I said, I don't know what to expect at 1.8.

So could I send the original file to one or two of you so you could check it out and let me know what you think?

At F1.8 the DOF is very shallow at its' closest focusing distance - 1.5 ft. and is generally softer at the hyper-focal distance. I haven't really experimented as such but it is super at 2.5 and above. It can be soft at f22 too I'm told but I haven't really scrutinized it that much. I have the "plastic" one. I think they are the same optically.

Send it, np.

I shot around 180 exposures last night with friends out for our regular Thursday dinner/trivia night at the local pub... I was shooting wide open with my new 50mm f/1.8 (lighting was limited to very dim incandescent and candle light), and it performed like a champ. Shots were almost all hand-held and either ISO 800 or ISO 1600. I'll post some up today.

All in all, with my first real exercise for this lens in low-light situations, I love it.

Cool, the sooner the better!

it's a great lens and as long as it does rattle when you shake it (ie it's broken) then buy it.

i have not used mine much. I got some terrible chromatic aberrations, but it was under terrible conditions i am now told. I was a bit disappointed none the less.
that was wide open(1.8), dusk, ISO 400 i think. The DOF was less than i had hoped for, but the AF might have grabbed a branch and not the house.
Is a close shot - my wife was maybe 2 or 3 feet away. Notice hte shallow DOF on this one! (i was holding my daughter so my head is just behind her 13 month old head) Nice and sharp i think.
Is my bokeh entry. This was taken with a 1x and 4x quantarray close up filters and F2.8 at about 3 inches away if that from the railing. I should have used manaul focus to the biggest drop in focus better.

BTW, I have the mark 2 (plastic mount) bought new from b&h, gray market, for $70 new last month.

Again, if anybody would be willing to look at the original sample image I got from the seller and let me know whether the copy looks sharp and acceptable compared to their copy that would be great. I haven't heard back from the 3 people I emailed the photo to already and I really need to get back to this guy.

It's the MkI but I also believe the optics are the same/similar.

seriously, like i said, unless it's broken it's going to be a good investment. If this guy takes a bad picture using wrong settings for the situation, it's not the lens's fault :-)

Are you saying that there are no bad copies or short/long focusing versions of this lens on the market after 15+ years?
02/11/2005 10:49:31 AM · #18
All down to price I suppose, I got the mk11 version for £55.00 almost throw away price. I looked on ebay for the mk1 but the prices were silly for what essentially is the same optics but better build.
No complaints, does suffer a little from fringing as stated, but only under extreme lighting situations.
My bokeh entry, not the best composition but I think pretty decent quality wise

Thanks Randy and Owen, for your replies!

Again, I'm not concerned about the lens in general. I'm confident it's a good buy, I just wanted to get a few 'second-checks' on the quality of this particular copy that I'm looking at from dpcers who actually own the lens, as they would best be able to compare.

I've gotten responses and I feel pretty good about it...thanks!

I have the new one, Very impressive for it's price.

the new one ( mark II ) is $70.00 US

it's lighter, and has great optics...
focuses fast, good bokeh, nice and sharp.
plus no worries it would be warrantied.

The mark I I'm buying is actually a great value and could easily be resold at the same price for what I'm getting it for.

If I'm not mistaken the Mark I is advantageous for it's build quality (incl. metal threads), distance scale and better focus ring (that's a big one for me).
