On my way back from my bridge assignment I stopped to take some photos of a river. There was another guy there with his camera, taking photos of ducks way down below.

A Nikon Coolpix 4300 attached to a lens many times its size....

This is funny. Did you talk to the guy and ask him about his equipments. Looks like some kind of a telescope.

That looks very much like a spotting scope, commonly used by birdwatchers. Between 1000mm and 1500mm by the looks of it. Some of the nikon ones have special camera adapters, but it's probably not too difficult to attach a camera to the eyepiece one way or another - i've been meaning to try this myself for ages.

Well, I didn't really talk to him about the equipment, but he told me what kind the ducks were, and when I spotted a large animal on top of a spur, he told me it was a kamoshika, or a serow in English, scientific name Nemorhaedus crispus (Capricornis crispus crispus). Ever heard of a serow? It's a goat antelope; strange-looking face, but I couldn't get a very good shot of it.

Maybe it was a spotting scope... I couldn't help but wonder why someone who could afford (or justify) a gun that big wouldn't be attaching it to an SLR. Reminds me of the threads about attaching mega speedlights to mini cameras.

And there is this one I took last year. The camera and tripod might be a bit hard to spot because they're camouflaged. The camera guy had a loop recording of "natural" sounds.
