I have spent a lot of time trying to fine-tune this image. I'm not sure how well the variations come across at this resolution, Comments?
(original as posted afew days ago)
(variation 1)
(variation 2)
Thanks, Robt.

Dang it, my eyes are not good enough to tell much difference at this resolution/my monitor.
Have you tried using a slight bluish tint (e.g. Cyan) to make the ice look colder? |

Variation 2 actually IS a little cooler. But to answer your question, yes I tried cooler and warmer duotones, and I was not happy with any truly cool version of the duotone.
The main differences here are in 2 areas: 1, the amount of detail I have cloned out of the water, especially in the lower left, and 2, the amount of glow I've brought into the highlights. The latter's quite subtle though. It's much more noticeable at print size. Look closely at the furthest reach of the peninsula and you will see the difference there perhaps. It's tangible but less obvious in the foreground. You can actually see the progression better in the thumbnails...

I like seeing the detail in the snow -- I guess that's variation 2, which looks the "brightest" -- but I'm a California native, and am not completely qualified to evaluate photos of anything under 40 degrees F. |

Yes, that's the idea; get the blacks rich and the brights luminous. Contrast alone wasn't doing it, it looked harsh. This is working with very slight applications of a diffuse glow tool, over a carefully-modulated tonal range.

Sounds good. You might consider a tritone, with a warm "second" color in the dark tones, and a cooler "third" color only in the highlights.
I have to go to work in about 7 hours -- I guess I'll check back tomorrow : ) |
