When you're out shooting, shoot at least a "roll" (25 exposures) on a single subject. And no fair shooting all 25 from the same vantage point. Get closer for some abstracts, get further away and put the subject in context. Shoot high, shoot low. Change your DOF. Even small changes "technically" can make big changes in terms of impact. The first shots will be easy and obvious. As you progress through the 25 shots, it'll be harder and harder to find a new way to look at it.

It may be that the best shot will be the first one you take. Or it may be that those are the most pedestrian and boring and that it won't be until you really stretch yourself that you get THE image.

My best shots are very often the first that I take. I try to think about the shot and just take a good one to begin with. I will shoot a second or third just for comparison - in case one is blurred or the exposure is bad. Unless it is something that changes, like a sunset, taking too many pictures can sometimes just make it that much harder to choose from later ;P
I guess the main reason I do this is because I can be a very annoying person to be around when I'm in photography mode. Those around me would really appreciate it if I'd learn to take a good shot from the beginning. Especially on vacation, you can miss a lot if you spend too much time looking through the lens.
