My home studio is a little cramped for space and in some cases if I do a family portrait, I don't think I'd be able to capture everyone with my Tamron 28-75mm.

Has anyone used the following two lenses as a portrait lens? And if so, will it distort the portrait or will it still look very good?

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM Zoom Lens
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Zoom Lens

Either one, at the wide end will not provide a flattering image of your subject. Unless you like the big nose, little head look.

Here are some photos with the 17-40.

There is some distortion (esp in the last one) so you have to be careful but it can be mitigated.

Just make sure to move the "distortion" to the chest area of a female subject, and I don't think there would be any complaints about a wide angle lens. :D

There are some very good correction programs, like PTLens available to get rid of some of the distortion inherent in some lenses. It dosen't help with keystoning but it diminishes the bulge effect, and not just with super short lenses. try it out as a plugin in photoshot and the results might surprise you. I have been messing around with the 10-22 and while it creates a fun-house mirror shot at 10mm past 15mm it is quite usable for non effect work even up pretty close.

Kevin, you are definately one of the people here that I can always count on for useful information! Thanks again!
