I am trying to match a good DPI to a 3.3 MP camera so I do not limit myself. What is the relationship between pixels and DPI? Is there a rule of thumb that the math works up and down the scale?

not exactly sure what you are asking here. could you elaborate? are you looking for a printer?
most photo labs print digital photos at no less than 300dpi. there should be something in your photo editing program to let you play with this. my camera is a 4mp. my files come off my camera at 72dpi. i shoot at the largest file i can 2240 pixels x 1680 pixels. by the time i set the res to 300 my image size is 7.4 x 5.6 and a 21meg file. not sure if this is helping at all.
