Even if you can't get as close, use photo editing software to crop instead of using the digital zoom. You can't crop a tremendous amount, but you can get closer while retaining quality.

I think 'Digital Zoom' is a waist of part of the firmware on a camera. Poor quality. I have a Panasonic 12X OPTICAL zoom with 4x digital and I have never used the digital zoom. I would rather invest in a 2X converter for optical but there is one problem, they are expensive.

it is definatly a waste, and probably just a marketing gimmick

Digital Zoom is for people who output pix directly to a printing device, who don't use programs that allow them to crop images. Works pretty good in typical 4x6 print sizes. Definitely not an option for those of us who use the likes of photoshop. But nevertheless very useful for snapshotters, who love it.

optical zoom is the way to go. my FUJI S5000 is a 3 to 6 million pixel camera with 37 mm - 370 mm (10x) optical (dig: max 4.4x). I've owned other cameras with digital zoom, its nothing like optical. Add a telephoto lens on for even more zooming power.

Better to turn off the digital zoom so you don't accidentally go into the digital range when zooming.

No problems, mate: my 5700 requires you hold the zoom button down for FOUR SECONDS before it goes into digital mode, then it shouts at you in the viewfinder what you've done... They know...
